So, now that we're again in need of a manager, who are the likely candidates? Will we stay in-house and give a Carlos May a shot? I think he's earned it. Or does Greg Beck deserve it? I'd like to see them go with a guy that has some name recognition in the area, someone that might bring some fans out to the park and be a good baseball guy. Would someone like a Greg Hibbard be considered? Last I heard, he was coaching in the Northern League.

Regarding Carlos May as a candidate for CHEETAHS manager: My understanding is Carlos has a full time job as an employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago. My brother-in-laws Uncle works with him! Also, Carlos does not accompany the CHEETAHS on road trips, I assume because of his "Postal" duties. We do need to keep him on staff, though, as coach a team ambassador.

While I do agree with you that the CHEETAHS are in need of a manager with name recognition, I also think someone with Frontier League or similiar experience, whether that be a current or former manager/coach with another orginization, that person should be considered. Remember, this is a developmental league and someone with strong teaching techniques should be a major consideration, too.

A suggestion; bring Chico Walker back as manager? He managed the team when they were in the Heartland League and was pretty successful. He was let go by a different regime of management, prior to the CHEETAHS becoming a member of the Frontier League, in 1999. He has name recognition, having played Major League ball with the cubs.

I commend GM Chuck Heeman on the decision he made to let Mike Moore go. It's never an easy decision to make, but without going into specifics, it was due. Mike brought an agressive style to the CHEETAHS offense this season that had been missing in past seasons, and made the team more exciting to watch in person.

But "personal problems" have to be addressed if it's affecting the team. The up and down play of the team recently, during an important stretch in the schedule, when the team still had the chance to make the playoffs, had to be considered. Just a few weeks back the CHEETAHS had a chance to capture the Western Division title and make the playoffs!

Let's hope the CHEETAHS can end the season on a positive note beating their arch (no pun intended) rivals from Rockford.

On a personal note I'd like to thank the Frontier League and the CHEETAHS organization for recognizing me a the Frontier Leagues 1 millionth fan. I'll certainly use my VIP pass frequently during the 2004 season, hoping to see many CHEETAHS home games, as well as visiting other stadiums around the league, to see the CHEETAHS play. Of course I'll proudly wear my CHEETAHS jersey to each contest. I'm a bit humbled by this honor and very appreciative in receiving it!

Hope to see all the great CHEETAHS fans at this weekend's finale at "The Hawk". GO CHEETAHS!!!!

Chico,

Somehow I KNEW Chico Walker's name would be thrown in there somewhere! :-)

I have no idea who will be the next manager - there's a lot of things to be settled after the season, including that area. There are already people interested, as tends to happen when an opening comes up, but it's way too early to make that decision.

Thank you for the kind words - obviously, one always hopes the day never comes when someone has to be let go. It shows that I didn't do my job in hiring, and it's disappointing to us all when the season is lost.

I also appreciate people not prying into the 'personal problem' aspect of this - only a couple of people mentioned it at the park tonight, and respected that these things remain in-house.

After tomorrow, we move ahead toward 2004 and we'll see what the off-season brings, in every aspect - staffing, players, managers, etc. Let's hope it's a good year.

On another note, anyone who is at the game tomorrow, please take the time to acknowledge Lindsey, Nathan, Pat, Erin, Jesse, Clubbie Mike, Jenny and Michael Conrad - these people worked far, far harder than anyone will ever know to hold the Cheetahs together this season. Some days were easy, and obviously many more were not. Everyone sees the players hustling and trying their best, but the people who work so hard to make this thing work are just as important.

See everyone at the park tomorrow, let's have fun with it!
Chuck

Chuck--

What game tomorrow? Wasn't this rain-shortened game the last of the season? (We stayed to the bitter end.)

Anyway----thanks for a great season. We enjoyed it tremendously.

And thank the staff for us, too. It really was a fun-filled season, and the baseball was better than I have seen in the past.

Looking forward to Cheetahs baseball in 2004.

Cookie

i would like to think that the cheetahs would give greg beck the oppurtunity to manage the team next season. if you attended games throughout the season and really payed attention, you can honestly say the team quit on then manager mike moore. players had to be sick of being treated like college players with the constent yelling and screaming bat after at bat. but when the managerial move was finally made (too late in my opinion) the team actually looked like they wanted to play again, albeit too late. bring beck back put him in charge, put ross kott at third, carlos may at first and let the cheetahs take the western division crown.

im not a big believer in bringing in a "name" to be manager. sure you may put more people in the seats, for what to see him take out the lineup for ground rules. no one comes to watch the manager manage the game. the last time i went to a game i watched the players. besides to be a good manager your only as good as your assistant coaches and players. just ask joe torre that question. if you have a team that is in contention for the league or divisional crown all year you will have people in the stands, no matter who the manager is.

Folks,

Thanks for your comments about the next manager - we will probably make that decision next month, after some of the smoke has cleared around here. We here at the ballpark read the same things you do in the paper, so some of the things we'd normally do at this time of year have been put a bit on hold as we see what direction the team takes.

Personally, I do agree that bringing in a 'name' guy isn't always the way to go. First, you never know if they can actually manage 30 people (players, coaches, trainer, etc.) - I know the Cheetahs have had some interesting experiences with former big leaguers. Second, it's been my experience in other places that when you bring in a former big-leaguer, that person is immediately looking for his NEXT job, rather than giving 100 percent to the current one.

I will tell you that Greg Beck will certainly be very high among the candiates, if I have any say in the decision. More than a few players talked to me about him prior to the end of the season, which is very impressive in itself. The players won't make that decision, but it's good to know there's someone out there they'd go to war with. Beyond that, we'll see how the next few weeks shake out.

Thanks again for the comments, it's good to see that people care about what happens here in Crestwood.

Chuck

My main reason for wanting a "name" guy is that theoretically, a guy with some name recognition would have the respect of the players when he walks into that clubhouse on day one.

come on. is that your main reason. this is professional baseball, not college summer league. if players dont walk into the clubhouse with respect on the first day, then they shouldnt be called professionals. besides, respect is earned not given.

Sure its professional baseball. But its also developmental professional baseball. Also, whether you like it or not, managers lose the respect of their clubhouses all the time. Just ask Jim Riggleman and Don Baylor how much respect the "professional" Sammy Sosa gave them on Day one. Dusty Baker was a name manager, and he managed to get Sosa in line on day one. Now, either Sosa isn't "professional" or there's something to be said for a manager with name recognition. I'm not saying that name recognition should be the only critera, nor should it be the most important. But I think it at least merits consideration.
