This discussion takes us to the consideration of differences among individuals and among communities as assets we should be thankful for. Not only in biology, but also in sociology and in linguistics, variety is seen as priceless. Regarding contrasts as cultural traits will help us learn about others and ourselves. However, if we see them as deviations, this view will limit our perceptions. This kind of reasoning is particularly valuable in the classroom as learners can explore their capacities more fully if they are appreciated in their uniqueness. This humanitarian approach is the motivation for the current drive for the promotion of critical literacy in the classroom.
