Subject: Discourse issues in cross-Cultural Pragmatics

Dear mates,

The text presents a particularly important issue considering that we are living in a globalized world where cross cultural interaction is the norm.
What we have been discussing in our group is that, as teachers, we must keep in mind that all individuals are inserted in a social, political, historical and geographical environment which influences their behaviors and perceptions in all areas.

Who are we dealing with? How do they live? What are their hopes and expectations? What are their main socio-cultural rules? The IP assumption that the learner should acquire the rules and norms of interaction of the host society, while acquiring the language, is simplistic. Teachers play a key role in the awareness raising of pragmatic differences between L1 and L2.
CP proposes a respectful attitude towards the learner, despite of the societal power of the individuals, communities and groups involved.
In order to communicate efficiently and really “speak a foreigner language” it’s necessary to be willing to give up pre established paradigms. We should search for identification points and learn from/with the leaner.

Another important point is that “ cross-cultural pragmatics is the norm not only across societies but also within them”. Taking our continent country as an example, rules of speaking may vary tremendously among the different regions of the country, thus causing: “…. misperceptions, prejudice and discriminations” especially between the south and north regions of Brazil.
We fully agree with Kátia”s comments: we should value our own unique identity as a people, and show the same repect we expect to receive, to the others.

Congrats to Antônio, Cristina, Flávia and Gustavo for the high quality presentation. All theoretical concepts were very successfully covered, it helped a lot our understanding of the text. The lay out and illustrations are perfect!
