I was on the board for a few years, I did my terms per the by-laws and did not seek further time.
It's either the organization for you or not, I had a great deal of personal expense due to my desire to do things right. It wasn't uncommon for me to spend $300 a month during the season on club related expenditures, expenditures that I did not seek reimbursement for because I didn't want it coming out of the money that helped out with the snacks, replace supplies, etc.
I'm not in the club now, I really don't have time. Work wise it's hard enough for me to make games.
If you weren't in the post Katrina group it's difficult to judge the job that they've done. I was part of two years of the pre-Katrina group and I can tell you there were wonderful members that would bend over backward to help and there were members that helped with conditions. Sometimes the time constraints that the member had and the time constraints that the overseeing board member had along with the timeline needed to get something done don't always mesh. The Board doesn't at least didn't used to get a lot of notice from the office for needs. I remember being asked AFTER a Saturday night game if we could take a player to an out of town airport the next morning, meaning I had to pick him up at 3 a.m., the person from the office that was supposed to have this all worked out forgot until the last minute. Several members were asked but none could comply, so my non friendly in the morning self picked him up and had to be back early to work on the Halloween set-up for that Sunday afternoon game and all the stuff I still had to get. By the way, I think my driving scared him to death. Shockingly enough the player didn't even know that he was missing the Halloween Trick or Treat and that I had to tell his sponsor group that the player they had purchased candy and decorations for wasn't going to be there. The communication from the front office to the club was not the best back then, I hope it has improved. There was a lot of behind the scene things that you weren't probably aware of.
Again, don't judge this group from the preceptions you have from the past. The comments about Mardi Gras, it appears you went on some misconceptions that you let brew. The board only meet and greet during training camp was a request of the office back then not the club. Because the players weren't actually signed the team could not require them to particpate a public event, contract regulations or something. That event usually was more of a fact finding and the team sat at one table and the board at another. More of a hi, grunt grunt, is the hamburger done, grunt grunt.
If I were still able to I'd probably be an active member and I don't think it should look badly on the individuals that while not in office do still participate. I've had several people be critical of me for not being involved any longer. Again, lots of people like to offer complaints but very few run for office. Instead of washing your hands of it you should have tried ot make a change.
