Looks like the indies in CD 20 will decide this race, since the GOP has less than a majority in yet to be counted absentee ballots. Tedisco, apparently, has a slight edge if a strict party line trend among these potential votes becomes a reality and the candidates divide the roughly 900 voters who aren't Democrats or Republicans.

Basically, when the inevitable recount occurs--unless serious irregularities surface--the post election tally reaffirms the positions of the contestants as the leading candidate adds to his or her lead.

Tedisco/Murphy race a dead heat

The Business Review (Albany)

The race to fill a congressional district covering the Capital Region is so close, it’s a dead heat.

That’s the official ruling that the state Board of Elections made on April 3. Democrat Scott Murphy, of Glens Falls, and Republican James Tedisco, of Glenville, each have 77,225 votes.

The election was held March 31. Absentee ballots will now decide who wins the election.

According to the state, 6,648 absentee ballots have been returned. Of that, 46 percent of ballots are from registered Republicans; 35 percent are from registered Democrats. About 15 percent come from voters not registered with any political party.

Ballots are scheduled to be opened April 13. Both campaigns are hiring attorneys to prepare for legal actions that will likely occur after the ballots are counted and a winner is declared.

Tedisco, a 26-year state assemblyman, and Murphy, a venture capitalist, are competing to fill the former seat of Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who is now in the U.S. Senate.

The sprawling 20th congressional district contains part of all of 10 counties, most in the Capital Region.

The district covers all of four Capital Region counties: Columbia, Greene, Warren and Washington. It also covers parts of Saratoga County and Rensselaer County.

More than 40 percent of voters in the district are registered with the Republican Party; 26 percent are registered Democrats, and 24 percent are not registered with any political party.
