Subject: Hand-me-down paddle

When I was 13 I earned myself a trip to an actual woodshed along with my best friend Randy. We had been caught smoking, selling cigarettes to other kids and being defiant towards adults. The woodshed belonged to Randy's grandfather along with an old oak wood paddle that had been in their family for generations. The paddle had quite a history and had been used on Randy’s great grandfather, grandfather, and on his dad and uncles when they were growing up. Now, due to our behavior, that paddle was being handed down, and both of us were going to be the next in line to experience a long standing discipline tradition. After an embarrassing walk to the woodshed, one by one we lowered our trousers and got our bare bottoms blazed by our dads in front of Randy's grandfather. We cried, yelled, howled, and danced while being corrected with that timeless relic which was once again serving its purpose. That multi-generational attitude adjuster may have been an antique but it hadn't lost any of its butt blistering power. I had the honor of being the first person outside of my friend’s family to feel the fury of that paddle. Just like the generations before us, we both came out of that woodshed very willing to change our ways.
