He grinned as she slid her hand in the crook of his elbow, walking with her out onto the sidewalk. He didn't honestly care where they went, so long as they did so together. Absentmindedly, he veered them to the left, heading for more of the city's downtown area. He had never thought he'd ever see the sights and sounds of his place again, so to be doing so felt almost like a dream. Prison had a way of taking your every thought or hope of the future and twisting it so it has no direction. Especially when a person's looking down the barrel of 25 to life, as he'd been.
He breathed deeply, scenting the freshness in the mountain air. It was a far cry from the dankness of the cell, and he was struck with an overpowering sense of gratitude for the beautiful woman who walked next to him. Without her help, it was likely that he would have rotted away in that cell, never again able to enjoy the pleasures of the outside life that he'd always taken for granted.
"Thank you again, Tori...for helping me to get out of that God forsaken place."' Green eyes flicked her way. "You don't realize what you miss when you're on the inside. Sure, freedom, and all that. But when you get out...shit. You appreciate everything."
He looked at the old cafes and businesses as they passed them, memories coming back with perfect clarity. This was what coming home was all about.
"How is everyone?" He asked softly, almost nervous to know. He was sure she'd kept more tabs than he'd been able to, as Freb had been the only contact he'd had. He knew a reunion of sorts would have to arranged, eventually. After everyone took care of personal business...and he assumed that there was plenty to take care of. That fateful night ten years ago had caused a lot of hurt.He was just glad that Tori had welcomed him...Tori had understood. Even if he himself didn't like his reasoning, she had seen what he meant and accepted him anyway.
