I happen to have been around severely retarded people in programs that are privately owned and partially state funded and there is one conclusion that strikes me everytime I go to one of these places; these people would have been better off dead. They have white trash taking care of them who are only interested in making a buck. The same applies to those elderly who are in nursing homes. These people ARE a burden to society, and society stuffs them in places where they don't have to look at them. Medicare covers the majority of them, and pays for operations that many so called "normal" people could never hope to afford, but yet these "normal" people are the ones who end up paying for it.

I don't think that there is any good reason to keep the majority of these people alive as they have such a low quality of life, and suck the funds out of programs such as medicaid. In your other post you quoted koop saying something to the effect of "Who knows what makes one person happy?" Good quote. Here's mine. "Who knows what makes one person sad?" We don't know in either direction. That's what makes this a hard topic to discuss.

Let me give you one final example. I've got a ferret who has cancer who is otherwise a normal ferret. When his quality of life dips below acceptable and he has seizures everyday and sleeps all the time and becomes bedsore and the like, I have no qualms with putting him to sleep. We even go as far as to say that that's the ethical thing to do.

If I'd afford my ferret this courtesy, you can surely bet that I'd afford a fellow human being this same courtesy.
