Okay John .... I say this politely, get over yourself.
I won't dare speak for others, but I ASKED for mine in the hip/butt. I found a nurse at my local clinic that I really like that has great technique. I've gotten 4 shots from her in the last 3 years. Starting with a tetanus booster & 3 flu shots. The tetanus was in the butt at my request because I hate the arm sorness that ALWAYS follows, 1 flu shot in the arm & 2 in the butt/hip.
The two most recent flu shots in the hip/butt, the first was a "grand experiment" to see if the lower region produced more or less pain for ME... Turns out at least with her technique alot less & for me that's a value I can't put a price on. The most recent was also at my request after what was now 2 very pleasant trips to the doctor ... KNOWING IN ADVANCE I'm getting a shot.... Which always makes me dislike going to the doctor.
Now, I know that alot of what's here is fantasy, you can take or leave what I say at your pleasure. I know there are shots out there where the medication hurts like hell, no matter how good the technique used ... I got more than a few as a kid and screamed bloody murder everytime.
In my case it's a case of simple math & good technique. 0.5-1.0 ML vaccine(s) into the arm vs the hip/butt is now an easy decision for me.... LARGER MUSCLE with less volume equals less pain during & afterwards.
Finally in direct response to to where I live ..... that's irrelevant to this discussion. Not all, but most doctors or nurses will honor a patient request. Ultimatly the decision is up to the doctor ... although the hip/butt isn't a reccomended injection site by ACIP, patient compliance is a larger issue ... not getting the vaccine vs getting it in an alternate site ...PLease stop "group think" it's slowly killing American society.
