To answer your other question, most nurses don't want to give shots in the butt because it is no longer the recommended injection site and the fear put into them of accidentally hitting the sciatic nerve. Also if the label instructions for the medicine specify to give it in the deltoid muscle (arm) they won't do it differently, especially younger nurses because that is how they have been trained. Me, I want to get all my shots in my butt because I hate the soreness and ache afterwords in my arm from some of the medicines such as tetanus shots. The shots themselves rarely hurt. I explain that to the nurse and there have been times I refused a shot because they wouldn't accomodate me. I have had to change doctors a couple of times in the past due to moving, etc. and I now make it a point to discuss this with the doctor at my first visit to make sure it is acceptable. I know there are shots out there where the medication hurts like hell, no matter how good the technique used ... I got more than a few as a kid and screamed bloody murder everytime. In my case it's a case of simple math & good technique. 0.5-1.0 ML vaccine(s) into the arm vs the hip/butt is now an easy decision for me.... LARGER MUSCLE with less volume equals less pain during & afterwards. Finally in direct response to to where I live ..... that's irrelevant to this discussion. Not all, but most doctors or nurses will honor a patient request. Ultimatly the decision is up to the doctor ... although the hip/butt isn't a reccomended injection site by ACIP, patient compliance is a larger issue ... not getting the vaccine vs getting it in an alternate site ...PLease stop "group think" it's slowly killing American society. A flu and a tetanus. As per protocol, height, weight, temperature (orally w/ probe unit), Blood Pressure all monitored first. As for rectal temperatures, as I posted above; in the past at an ER, I got a rectal temp and while laying there, received a shot in each cheek. Don't think it's (RT) that common, though I don't say it doesn't happen when certain butt shots are administered. Second point is the subject of a hip/buttock shot being discussed/offered for an injection such as a flu shot or tetanus. I suspect there are those injections/meds that need to be given in the butt or hip, but I don't know that to necessarily be the case for flu/tetanus.
