RUSTON -- Nearly two weeks ago, tragic blasts in Boston shook a nation and the world.

But on Saturday, a moment of silence resounded in Ruston and another race began: The Walk/Run 4 Children for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, five of which are in Louisiana.

"They help 62 children a minute and it's with anything, whether that's a disease, whether that's an accident or premature birth so it's a wonderful cause to support," said the Run's coordinator, Mallory Cox.

Students came together to join the millions of people and communities nationwide who raise awareness to the number of people who are affected by cancer, and to support research for a cure through Relay for Life events, founded by the American Cancer Society.

Miss Southeastern, Renee Picou, was among the 25 students who participated and helped plan the event. Picou has been involved with Relay for Life events since she was in 4th grade and continues to support the American Cancer Society through her platform on her journey to becoming Miss Louisiana.

“When I became Miss Southeastern, there was no doubt in my mind what my platform would be,” said Picou. “I chose the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is not only my platform, but my passion. I am happy and proud to know that there are other students on campus that share my passion.”

It's that time of year when many MAO contestants are holding events to raise funds for the CMN requirement. Many MLO contestants are advertising that "all funds/profits go to CMN."

But that phrase is untrue. A percentage of the funds actually go to MAO.

Is it right for the contestants to falsely advertise the recipient of their fundraising? Or are they even aware of where the fundraising dollars actually go?

Victoria Cleveland was named Miss Lafayette and Anna Blake was selected as the Outstanding Teen during the eighth annual Miss Lafayette pageant Saturday night.

Cleveland dazzled the crowd with a rendition of "Home" from the Broadway musical "The Wiz," a performance that also earned her the night's Miss Talent award. She also impressed the judges during the on-stage questions, where she said failure can help a young person's self-esteem because it creates a learning experience that they can draw from in the future.

Cleveland will now go on to compete in the Miss Louisiana pageant in June.

"I'm so, so grateful for this. I'm just so grateful to the entire organization," said Cleveland, a Louisiana State University freshman majoring in textile and apparel design. Cleveland is also hearing impaired in one ear, but that hasn't stopped her from pursuing her loves of singing, theater and performance.

"It's been an amazing journey, and I can't wait to continue," she said.

Blake, from Ruston, was stunned with her Outstanding Teen victory since this was her first pageant. During the on-stage question, Blake said she would choose to switch places for a day with singer Taylor Swift because of her impact on young women. Her rapid-fire piano rendition of "The Cat and The Mouse" was a highlight of the night that drew huge applause from the crowd and earned her the Teen Talent award.

"I can't believe it," Blake said, adding that she finally decided to compete in a pageant after her sister kept urging her on. "This is so incredible, especially for my first time. It's a true honor."

Blake will also compete in the Miss Louisiana pageant.

The Miss Louisiana pageant winners will go on to compete for the title of Miss America.

The Acadiana Outstanding Teen award went to Maggie Milstead. Aja Majkrzak was named Miss Acadiana.

Out of the 13 known contestants to compete at Miss Louisiana under the Lafayette title:
- 1 Miss Louisiana (1968)
- 1 1RU (2011)
- 4 T5 (2002, 2008, 2009, 2012)
- 1 T10 (1969)

Not too shabby!

Also, a contestant representing USL competed in 1975. Other than that year, the university has not competed at Miss Louisiana.

The revival of a Winnfield-based franchise reintroduces an area that has sent a representative to Miss Louisiana dating back to 1951, when Jenna Fae Whatley competed as Miss Winnfield. Whatley held the same title in 1952, when she placed 1RU.

Other titles from Winnfield have included Miss Louisiana Forest Festival--Miss Louisiana 1984 Anita Whitaker won with this title, and Miss Louisiana 1990 Linnea Fayard was 1RU in 1989--and Miss Governor City Louisiana.

Winnfield was also hometown to Miss Louisiana 1968 Susanne Sanders.

I heard some of the outstanding teen didn't have to do a local pageant. They were chosen by the directors. Am I the only one that thinks this is unfair?!

Subject: Miss Lafayette Update: Deadline to enter Miss Lafayette is one week from today, Feb.10. Rental fee ($1,000) for auditorium must be paid by Friday, Feb. 8. Thus far, interest has been minimal- only 4 total girls have expressed interest in competing. .. In both teen and miss combined! Unless there is lots of interest in the next few days, there will be no Miss Lafayette/Miss Acadiana at Miss LA in June?

The Miss Lafayette Scholarship Organization is now accepting contestants from throughout south Louisiana to compete in its 8th annual pageant, which will be held on February 23 at Burke Hall on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus. Miss Lafayette is an official preliminary to the Miss Louisiana Pageant and to Miss America. Young women between the ages of 17-23 are invited to compete in the Miss division, and girls between the ages of 13-17 are eligible to vie for the Outstanding Teen title.

Unlike other pageants, Miss America judges contestants in performing talent, judges’ interview, Lifestyle & Fitness, and Evening Wear. The oldest scholarship program for women, the Miss America Organization has been around for over 90 years. Winners in both the Miss and Teen divisions will be awarded cash scholarships and paid entry into the Miss Louisiana/ Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen Pageants, which will be held this summer in Monroe, Louisiana.

Here's some notable moments for Louisiana Stockshow:

2010 - In her first year competing at Miss Louisiana, Lauren Vizza is 3RU. She would go on to be crowned Miss Louisiana 2012.

2007 - Becky Wilson Lewis, co-director of Miss Louisiana Stockshow and Miss Louisiana 1975, is re-crowned. She lost much of her memorabilia in a house fire. Wilson was also Miss Louisiana Stockshow in 1974, placing 2RU.

2006 - Hometown girl Lori Leggitt places 2RU. This is the second time she has held the Louisiana Stockshow title, in which she placed in the Top 10 at Miss Louisiana 2004.

1999 - Double-prelim winner Julie Lawrence is crowned Miss Louisiana 1999. She would go on to win Preliminary Talent, Non-Finalist Talent, and the Miss America Scholar Award at Miss America 2000.

1988 - Valerie Brosset is crowned Miss Louisiana. She would place in the Top 10 at Miss America 1989 and won Preliminary Swimsuit wearing the famous white supersuit.

1973 - Representing the Northeast Louisiana Stockshow, Debbie Ward wins the Miss Louisiana title. Until Patricia Brant, Ward would be the highest-placing Miss Louisiana, finishing 3RU and winning Preliminary Talent at Miss America 1974. She would be a featured performer and co-host of the Miss America pageant for the next several years.

Subject: Vizza at the pageant: 'Now I get to enjoy it' (The News Star)

Date Posted: Sunday, January 06, 03:13:41pm

http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20130105/news01/130105005/vizza-pageant-now-get-enjoy-

Miss Louisiana 2012 Lauren Vizza said she plans on enjoying every minute of her time at the 2012 Miss America Pageant, no matter the outcome.

“It’s all so surreal. It’s finally here,” Vizza said during a phone interview from Las Vegas, where the competition is being held. “It’s very exciting. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a lot of time. Now I get to enjoy it.”

“Not only has Lauren been preparing for each phase of competition, but she has been performing the job of being Miss Louisiana,” Warren said. “Most people don’t realize that it is truly a job.”

In October, Vizza spoke to more than 10,000 children in Ouachita Parish Schools, encouraging them to be drug free and to make right decisions throughout life. She has traveled the state visiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, as well as representing the March of Dimes as its statewide spokeswoman. She has spoken at churches, civic clubs, ribbon cuttings and many other events throughout the state, while also promoting her platform — Be a S.T.A.R. (encouraging children and youth to volunteer).

“She has had very little down time over the past six months,” Warren said. “We feel that the best preparation for Miss America is actually performing the job, and Miss Louisiana is always prepared when they get to Vegas because they have performed the job of Miss Louisiana, which is similar to that of Miss America except of course Miss America is on an even larger scale.”

For the talent portion of the competition, Vizza will be performing a lyrical dance to the song “The Time of My Life,” made famous by American Idol winner David Cook.

The song holds personal significance for Vizza, particularly the line “This is the time of my life.”

“That has really been a theme for me this year. This is the time,” Vizza said. “I’m enjoying everything in the moment and recognizing how important and how monumental this moment really is.”

Dewana Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization, said this is also the time for a Miss Louisiana to take home the national crown.

No Miss Louisiana has ever won a Miss America title.

“We are certainly hoping this is the time for Louisiana to bring home the Miss America crown and it could not be a more appropriate time as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Miss Louisiana Pageant in June,” Little said. “Having a Miss Louisiana as a Miss America would provide us the opportunity to further promote awareness of the goals and purpose of the Miss Louisiana Organization by empowering young women through education.”

Vizza, a Shreveport native and senior at Louisiana Tech University, flew out of the Monroe Regional Airport last Tuesday for the pageant. Preliminary competition begins this Tuesday and runs through Thursday. The pageant culminates in the live televised finals at 7 p.m. Saturday on ABC.

The pageant is being held at the Planet Hollywood Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
During most of her time in Sin City, Vizza and the other contestants will be in and out of rehearsals in preparation for the competition.

Vizza will have her personal interview with the judges on Tuesday morning. She will then compete in swimsuit and evening gown Tuesday evening, talent on Wednesday and on-stage question on Thursday.

“I feel ready,” Vizza said. “I’m prepared in every way possible for all the phases of competition. I honestly don’t feel nervous.”

Vizza said her goal is to enjoy her experience at the Miss America Pageant and to do her best in representing Louisiana.

She said she has enjoyed meeting the other contestants and is sharing a room with Miss Hawaii.

Darris Warren, vice president of the Miss Louisiana Organization, said Vizza has been rigorously preparing since becoming Miss Louisiana in June.

Vizza, competing as Miss Louisiana Tech University, was crowned Miss Louisiana 2012 by predecessor Hope Anderson in June at the Monroe Civic Center. After a friend convinced her to enter, Vizza went on to compete in the Miss Louisiana Pageant three times, making the Top Five each year.

Her days typically start with her physical trainer, then she moves on to interview preparation and then perfecting her dance routine with Miss Louisiana 2007 Amanda May, Warren said.

Miss Minden 2013
Will there be one?

A decades-old tradition may be at risk if more participation from the community is not received.

Every year the Young Women's Service Club sponsors an annual Miss Minden pageant for high school girls, where winners are awarded scholarships.

However, the Little Miss Minden Pageant, for girls from infancy to 14 years old, is the service club's scholarship fund raiser, and it's in trouble.

Various supporters and family members were on hand at Monroe Regional Airport on New Year’s Day to wish Miss Louisiana well as she boarded a plane Tuesday bound for Las Vegas.

Lauren Vizza, a senior at Louisiana Tech University, will represent Louisiana in the Miss America Pageant, to be held at the Planet Hollywood Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Vizza said she was “really excited” and said the trip was a great way to kick off the new year.

“It’s really just an honor to be able to compete,” Vizza said. “I just feel so blessed not only to be able to represent my town, my university and then represent the entire state of Louisiana.”

Vizza, competing as Miss Louisiana Tech University, was crowned Miss Louisiana 2012 by predecessor Hope Anderson in June at the Monroe Civic Center. After a friend convinced her to enter, Vizza went on to compete in the Miss Louisiana Pageant three times, making the top 5 each year.

A phrase emblazoned on a variety of shirts worn by Vizza’s family and supporters Tuesday was, “This is the time.” No Miss Louisiana has ever won a Miss America pageant.

Dewanna Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization, said the phrase will be used extensively on social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, in the form of hashtag, “#thisisthetime.”

Little said she was excited to see another resident of northeastern Louisiana represent the state in the Miss America Pageant.

“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work,” Little said. “This is kind of like sending your baby off. (Vizza) has worked very hard.”

Vizza majors in political science with minors in history and English at Tech. Following her undergraduate degree, she plans to obtain her law degree and
pursue a career in foreign diplomacy.

Vizza said she planned to represent her region to the best of her ability at the pageant.

“I’m actually going to wear a Duck Commander shirt,” Vizza said, with a chuckle. “I’m planning on embracing every stereotype of northern Louisiana. I have some stuff in black and gold I plan to wear, too.”

Vizza also serves as the spokeswoman and ambassador for Louisiana’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Louisiana March of Dimes, Louisiana Cares for Children and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Preliminary competition for the Miss America Pageant is Jan. 8-10 with the live televised finals at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 on ABC.

It looks like Lauren Lyles just started a fan page on Facebook for her opera career. I just watched several of her videos and thought it might be nice to let people know/give them a way to show their support if they wanted a way to keep in touch with her and her building career. No need for bashing, just thought I'd spread the word if anyone wanted to keep in touch with this former contestant. I don't believe she is competing any more in the organization.

Nearly a nun: Beauty queen picks Miss Universe pageant over convent

Abigail Hyndman, 22, Miss British Virgin Islands, is among the 89 young women from around the world vying for the title of Miss Universe 2012. But she’s the only one in the contest who almost became a nun.

As a biology major at Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic school in New Orleans, Hyndman had Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament as professors, advisers and deans. “I really did start to fall in love with them and the work they were doing,” she told TODAY.com, especially their leadership in recovery from Hurricane Katrina. “Volunteering with them, I thought, you know, maybe this is something I could do for the rest of my life.”

The seventh annual Glitz, Glamour & Giving Gala benefiting the United Way serving St. Tammany was all that and more. The event offered glitz, evident in both the seasonal bling on display at the Northshore Harbor Center and the elegant attire of the guests; glamour, paraded during a fashion show of men's and women's formal wear; and numerous opportunities for giving, through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales and generous bids on a varied collection of silent auction items.

Volunteering to model designs by Ladies & Gents Formal Wear were Mason Becnel, Courtney Benson, Jenna Bernoil, Yvette Catois, Lindsey Cramer, Meagan Johnson, Jamie Lumbardino, Lauren Mannella, Colleen Seeley, Chrissy Chiri-Smith, Stephanie Tranchina, Tommy Williams, Kelcey Whitfield, Myers, Smith, Kaufmann, Foltz, DiGiovanni and Drennan.

'Casino Royale: A Night in Monte Carlo' was the theme of the 2012 Glitz, Glamour & Giving Gala held Dec. 8 at the Northshore Harbor Center near Slidell. Here, Slidell's Jamie Lumbardino, Miss Louisiana Jazzland, projects glitz and glamour as she models fashions from Ladies & Gents Formal Wear.
