Newly crowned Miss Shreveport, Justine Ker, is a very busy lady these days.

Studying for a medical school entrance exam while at the same time preparing for state competition at the Miss Louisiana Pageant would likely be deemed challenging by most of us, but this 20-year-old, Asian-American beauty from Choudrant has already proved she possesses the right amount of confidence and the necessary ability to bring both her academic and pageant ambitions to fruition.

For 55 years, female Southeastern students have graced the stage in hopes of earning the title of Miss Southeastern. The pageant hosts a different number of competitors each year, but the goal has always been the same: to find the one who has the beauty, talent and grace to represent the university for the upcoming year.

This year, family, friends and university staff gathered at Pottle Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Eight contestants took the stage, but it was sophomore kinesiology major Emily Randon who stole the show, earning the title of Miss Southeastern 2015.

“This is my first pageant,” said Randon. “Overall, it taught me to be a more well-rounded individual, just like I said in my on-stage question. I not only focused on my dancing, but I also focused on my public speaking and my platform, which is skin cancer advocacy and awareness.”

After many rewarding experiences, Ruston native Anna Blake will be handing down her crown as Miss Spirit of Ruston.

The 2013 Miss Spirit of Ruston was the youngest contestant in the Miss Louisiana Pageant held in June, where she placed in the Top 10.

“It was so much fun, and a learning experience,” she said. “You can’t know what to expect until you do it. The older girls really took me under their wings and we had a lot of fun.”

The Miss Dixie Gem Peach Scholarship Organization will hold their annual pageant at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Choudrant High School.

Newly crowned Miss Louisiana Lacey Sanchez wants kids to become physically active. It’s a platform she is uniquely qualified to push.

When Sanchez, a Baton Rouge resident, was crowned on June 28 in Monroe, she became the first collegiate varsity athlete to become Miss Louisiana, according to the pageant’s executive director, Dewana Little. Sanchez was a pole-vaulter at St. Michael High School in Baton Rouge, then at Southeastern Louisiana University and LSU. At Southeastern, she won the Southland Conference pole-vaulting championship in 2010, and she produced the third-best women’s vaults indoors and outdoors in LSU history.

“Lacey is definitely not the stereotype ‘pageant girl,’” Little said. “We have never had such a successful athlete to capture the title of Miss Louisiana. Lacey is definitely a first to blend a competitive athletic lifestyle and skills with six-inch heels and an evening gown.”

Meagan Crews, 17, won the crown and title of Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen 2014 and will be leaving July 24 to begin her quest for the national title. Crews, a senior at Parkway High School, said she can’t even explain how she felt when she was announced as the state pageant’s winner.

“It’s definitely something you think about and dream about,” she said. “Until it’s actually happening to you, though, it’s the craziest thing. It’s an unfathomable moment.”

Now she has her eyes set on the national title and is working toward becoming the next Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. Several fundraising events have been organized to help cover her expenses for the national pageant, which will total about $5,000.

The first is tonight (June 30) at Johnny’s Pizza on Barksdale Boulevard. A portion of sales between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will be given to Crews, who will be there for a meet and greet as well. There will also be a silent auction and raffle for gift certificates to local businesses. The raffle drawing will be held July 20.

A Facebook page has been created with information on upcoming fundraisers. It can be found at www.facebook.com/pages/Fundraiser-for-Meagan-Crews.
