Thirty-six young women from across the state will make Monroe their home this week as they vie for the Miss Louisiana crown.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo and local officials welcomed the 36 Miss Louisiana contestants Monday to begin the week-long activities leading up to the crowning of a new Miss Louisiana Saturday.

Preliminary competition for the 49th Miss Louisiana Pageant will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The live televised finals will feature the top 10 contestants and begins at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Miss Louisiana Organization executive director Dewana Little said the 36 contestants will receive more than $1 million in cash and scholarships.

The contestants began rehearsals Monday afternoon.

"We have a lot of things going on Tuesday with more rehearsals and interviews beginning Wednesday, then competition Thursday and Friday and finals on Saturday," Little said.

The public can see a preview of the contestants at 5 p.m. Tuesday during a style show in Pecanland Mall in front of Dillard's. That evening, Dr. Guthrie Jarrell will host a reception at his home.

Wednesday will be devoted to rehearsals day and night.

Wednesday night the 36 contestants, 20 ambassadors and Miss Louisiana 2011 Hope Anderson will be treated by Orange Leaf in Monroe to celebrate the end of rehearsals.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo said Anderson has done a great job representing Louisiana and he knows the next Miss Louisiana will continue that tradition.

"All of you are winners because you do such an outstanding job. I notice how hard these young ladies work and everything they participate in they do an outstanding job," Mayo said. "The parents, friends and family who come here to support you all are second to none and we certainly appreciate them as well."

He presented the Miss Louisiana Organization with $25,000 Monday to go towards scholarship funding.

Little said the week leading up to the crowning is always bittersweet because as the organization welcomes a new Miss Louisiana, it says goodbye to another.

She said Anderson has been a tremendous Miss Louisiana, promoting the state and raising money for charitable organizations.

"It's so unbelievable it's been one year since I was crowned the 48th Miss Louisiana and we now have 36 incredible, talented, articulate, amazing young women all vying for this thing on top of my head. They are all deserving," Anderson said. "This year has been nothing short of amazing. It's been a year of growth for me personally. I hit the ground running last fall and I was able to go into several school systems and present a motivational program called, 'Love the Skin You're In," which addressed self-esteem and bullying."

Anderson placed in the top 10 at last year's Miss America Pageant and received the Miracle Maker Award, which is awarded to the three contestants who raise the most money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Anderson raised more than $40,000 for the organization.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the ladies compete this week. I know they're going to bring their A game and I wish them the best of luck. Thank you so much to our sponsors. They are the lifeblood of this organization. We could not do this without them," Anderson said.

Corporate sponsors include the city of Monroe and Mayor Jamie Mayo, the Monroe/West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau and Alana Cooper, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Marriott Properties, Louisiana Tech University, Louisiana Propane Dealers, and the Big Whit Foundation.

Miss Southeastern 2012 Jennifer Jarreau will be previewing some of her routine and apparel before she competes at the 2012 Miss Louisiana Pageant.

The trunk show will be hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) in the Student Union Theater on Thursday, June 14 at 4 p.m.

Jarreau, a middle school education major, received her crown after both Olivia Ruby and Bethany Putnam were unable to fulfill the duties as Miss Southeastern. Jarreau was the second runner up in the Miss Southeastern competition, but with her being later crowned, she has embraced the idea of representing Southeastern.

“Being able to represent the university as Miss Southeastern has been the experience of a life time,” said Jarreau. “I am so honored to represent Southeastern on campus, in the community and in the Miss Louisiana Pageant.”

As a part of her fundraising, Miss Southeastern has raised $2,133 that will be donated to local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Jarreau has been at multiple events on campus and throughout the community, raising donations through selling raffle tickets at the annual Rock N’ Roar, hosting the Cuts for a Cause that was held in the Student Union and two Chili’s give back days. She also has a personal platform that she has raised money for, a cause that is truly close to her heart.

“Healthy Hearts Foundation is my personal platform. I chose this platform in honor of my grandfather who struggled with heart disease all his life,” said Jarreau. “The Healthy Hearts Foundation promotes the importance of living a healthy life for people of all ages and raises funds and awareness for the preventions and cures to heart disease and stroke. I have worked closely with REC Sports and Wellness to raise funds for the American Heart Association and promote awareness in the community by hosting the Womanless Beauty Pageant in January and the Heart Walk on May 4.”

Jarreau continues to work on her routine, preparing for the Miss Louisiana Pageant that will be held from June 21-23. She is grateful to have help along the way from her team and cannot wait for the competition.

“Preparations have been keeping me very busy and a little stressed to say the least, but completely worth it,” said Jarreau. “I am so blessed to have such a large support team to help me along the way. I'm ready to see all of our hard work pay off the week of the pageant.”

Jarreau would like all the support she can get before she goes to Monroe. Win or lose, in the end it’s about the green and gold for Miss Southeastern.

“I love being able to represent the university and show my lion pride,” said Jarreau.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Miss Louisiana 2011 Hope Anderson is visiting communities across the state on a farewell tour before crowning her successor later this month.
The Monroe native launched her tour in New Orleans Monday and later in the day will be in Morgan City.
Anderson used her title to champion health-related causes such as the Children's Miracle Network and Pilots for Patients, a charity program launched in her hometown in 2008 in which pilots donate their time to fly patients to medical treatment.
"I just have a special spot for the kids and really all people with dire health circumstances," Anderson told the Associated Press. "We all know someone who's in need, have witnessed a loved one going through a tough time or who's had to walk a rockier path because of a health issue. When I see someone in pain, I just want to help any way I can."
Last year Anderson raised more than $40,000 for the five Children's Miracle Network-affiliated hospitals in Louisiana. She also took part in the 1,000th flight of Pilots for Patients last summer. Anderson flew with a patient from Monroe to M.D. Anderson in Houston for a weekly chemotherapy treatment, she said.
"These pilots use their own time, their own planes, their own resources to help these patients," Anderson said. "It's an organization that is very near and dear to my heart."
Anderson holds an undergraduate degree in communications from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She plans to use her Miss Louisiana scholarship money to take part in a health communications program being offered through Johns Hopkins Hospital next year.
After relinquishing her crown on June 23, Anderson said she plans to move to New Orleans to teach yoga and work at one of the TV stations for a year.
"I've just always wanted to live in New Orleans and be a local just for a little while," she said.
More than 30 women are expected to compete in the 2012 Miss Louisiana pageant scheduled for June 21-23 at the Monroe Civic Center. The pageant includes interview, talent, swimsuit and evening gown competitions. The finals, during which Anderson will crown her successor, will be broadcast live statewide on June 23 at 8 p.m. CDT.
Miss Louisiana is the official preliminary of the Miss America organization, a nonprofit that is a major source of scholarships for women. Last year, the Miss Louisiana organization awarded nearly $1 million in prize money and scholarships, and the Miss America awarded more than $45 million.
"The scholarships are incredible," Anderson said.
Anderson said getting to know her home state of Louisiana has been her favorite part of her reign.
"This is such a special state," she said. "It's a really unique and diverse place."
Anderson will also visit Lafayette, Alexandria and Shreveport before wrapping up her farewell tour in Monroe.

Click on this link and like the Macy's facebook page. Then like the star spangled sing-off. We are on the 3rd page of videos in our matching brown suits. Click on our video and hit vote. You can only vote once a day. Thank you so so so much!

I have been with the Victory Belles for 2 and a half years now. We travel the world performing for veterans and active duty military. Our "home base" is the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, which I now call home. It's so hard to call the Belles a job. I am so lucky to be where I am but I know that I wouldn't be here without everything that I learned on the Miss Louisiana stage. Thank you all for your support and votes! I can't wait to see who takes home the crown this year!!!
