http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20140329/NEWS01/303290024/Brawny-men-don-heels-help-fight-domestic-violence

Sporting a pair of shiny, beloved knockout heels can give almost any woman the confidence she needs to take on the world. But sporting a shiner due to a knockout punch from someone she loves can make the same woman feel beaten by the world.

“To see these men in heels walking around the block really shows their support,” said Walk A Mile In Her Shoes organizer Chelsi Hefner, Miss Heart of Pilot 2014 and Miss Shreveport 2013. “This is just a great, funny way to make a statement about violence against women.”

The event raised more than $200 through participation and donations for Providence House and the Children’s Miracle Network. These causes tie into Hefner’s personal platform, L.I.V.E. (Living to Inspire, Value and Empower.)

My name is Ashlynn Lanford, a junior at Pineville High School. I am also Miss Louisiana Jazzland’s Outstanding Teen. On May 31, I will be competing for the title of Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen. One of the things I do as an Outstanding Teen is to volunteer for and promote an organization I believe in.

I want to invite the community to come out and support a very worthy event. The eighth Arts and Healthcare Follies and Art Exhibit is coming up soon. It is the signature fundraiser for Arts & Healthcare Inc. It is held to showcase the talents of local doctors and health-care professionals and in honor of National Doctor’s Day (March 30 each year). This year, the event will take place Saturday, March 29, beginning at 6:30 pm at Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center in downtown Alexandria.

Ten years ago...
Miss Ouachita Parish Jennifer Dupont was crowned Miss Louisiana 2004. It was her first time competing on the state level in MAO. The title made her Louisiana's only triple crown winner to date and the sixth to achieve the feat. She was also the first dancer to win the crown since 1999. Dupont won preliminary swimsuit and placed first runner up to Miss America 2005.

Twenty years ago...
Miss Shreveport Tiffany Mock was crowned Miss Louisiana 1994. She had competed at Miss Louisiana several times, placing third runner up the previous year and first runner up in 1991.

Thirty years ago...
Miss Louisiana Forest Festival Anita Whitaker became the first black woman to be crowned Miss Louisiana in 1984. She had steadily moved up in position from year to year, placing first runner up in 1983, second runner up in 1982, and fourth runner up in 1981. Although Whitaker did not place at Miss America 1985, she would become one of the most visible Miss Louisiana titleholders.

Forty years ago...
Miss Lake Charles Libby Lovejoy was crowned Miss Louisiana 1974. She would be the third consecutive Miss Louisiana to make the top ten and second consecutive top five placement at Miss America, coming in fourth runner up.

Fifty years ago...
Miss Rapides Parish Cherie Martin was crowned Miss Louisiana 1964. She was the third consecutive Northeast Louisiana State College student to win the title.

Elizabeth Wise was able to get in one last ribbon cutting before she hangs up her Miss Minden sash Saturday night.

The 19-year-old freshman at University of Louisiana at Lafayette breezed into Minden Thursday on a cold front among snow flurries just in time to assist in the grand reopening of KASO/KBEF Radio before rushing off to Miss Minden practice.

"It was always a childhood dream to be Miss Minden," Wise said. "You don't realize how important it is until you have to give it away to the next deserving girl. You kind of become a protector of the crown."

If 23-year-old Megan Miller appeared confident and poised last week when her audition aired on Fox's Season XIII of American Idol, it's because the Ethel native had a year to get ready.

For Miller, it was the second time the local singer has appeared on the mega-hit show, American Idol. Could a second time around be her lucky charm?

Once Taylor Layman decided to enter the Miss Northwestern State – Lady of the Bracelet Pageant, she was all in. That commitment paid off for her as she won the 56th annual pageant.

Layman will represent Northwestern State in the 2014 Miss Louisiana Pageant this summer in Monroe. She received more than $8,000 in scholarships and prizes.

“This was my first pageant,” said Layman. “I thought about doing it my freshman year, but Tori Thompson (the 2012 Miss Northwestern – Lady of the Bracelet) and I were good friends and I didn’t want to compete against her. I started thinking about it again last summer and my fellow freshman connectors really encouraged me. SAB President Alayni Guidry told me I had to do it. I went to the first informational session and decided I wasn’t backing down. Then I started preparing.”

The reign of a new Miss Southeastern has begun. The second time was the charm for junior kinesiology major Crystal Gonzalez. On Saturday Nov. 2, Gonzalez was crowned Miss Southeastern 2014.

She was inspired to compete for the title of Miss Southeastern by her special connection to the university as a Hammond native. Gonzalez attended Southeastern’s Laboratory School for nine years and the university has been a part of her life since she was five years old. Her family history at Southeastern also contributed to her quest for the crown. The platform Gonzalez chose was of a sensitive issue, “Taking the Wheel: Driving under the Influence Awareness and Prevention.”

“I would love to promote Southeastern to our community, to our high schools, around the state,” said Gonzalez. “I’m from Hammond, and I want to tell our locals to stay in Hammond for college because the experience they’re looking for is here. Everything they want is right here at Southeastern.”

There were several stages of competition including lifestyle and fitness, talent, on-stage questions and evening wear. Prior to the pageant, all contestants participated in personal interviews by the judging panel beginning at 9 a.m. Gonzalez performed “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” during the talent competition.

“I was extremely anxious because this meant a lot to me but it was worth it,” said Gonzalez, explaining how she felt throughout the pageant.

After participating in the 2013 pageant and earning 2nd Runner-Up, she decided to participate again in hopes of earning the crown. When her name was called, Gonzalez was crowned by her Alpha Omicron Pi sister and Miss Southeastern 2013 Renee Picou. The emotions were clear on her face as the audience stood and clapped for the newly crowned Miss Southeastern 2014.

In addition to winning the title of Miss Southeastern, Gonzalez also won the People’s Choice Award, Interview Award and Lifestyle and Fitness Award. Along with the title, Gonzalez will receive a full year of tuition, a local Miss America Crown, a $1,000 clothing allowance provided by the Campus Activities Board, recognition at many Southeastern and community events and an all expense paid trip to Monroe, La. to compete in the Miss Louisiana Pageant.

First runner up was Erin St. Pierre, a senior kinesiology major, followed by second runner up Hailee Weber, a sophomore special education major, Lionette and Phi Mu member, and third runner up Jasmine Tate, a junior communication major, Campus Life Editor at the Lion’s Roar and a founding president of the Public Relation Student Society of America.

“There are just no words to explain my feelings: relief, pride, love, just everything that I loved about Southeastern ran through my head. It’s an amazing feeling,” said Gonzalez.

Subject: Miss Louisiana leaves for Atlantic City and Miss America Pageant--Friends, family and fans bid farewell to Jaden Leach

Date Posted: Tuesday, September 03, 08:50:28am

Dozens of family members, friends and supporters gathered Monday at the Monroe Regional Airport to wish Miss Louisiana 2013 Jaden Leach good luck before she left for the Miss America Pageant.

Leach, a senior political science major at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, was showered with hugs and well-wishes from the crowd who came to see her off.

Since being crowned in June, Leach, 21, has been actively preparing for the Miss America Pageant, which will be held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

“I’m feeling really, really good,” she said. “I’m really not nervous because I know I have done everything I possibly can to prepare, so I’m just excited and ready to be there.”

Dewana Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization, testified to Leach’s hard work and determination.

“It’s been very fast and furious these eight weeks since she was crowned, and the momentum is very high,” Little said. “She and I were talking last night — if we had another two weeks, there’s not anything she would do to change, so we think she’s ready to go and bring home the crown of Miss America to Louisiana.”

Leach will try to become the first Miss Louisiana to become Miss America.

Leach will be joined next week by a group comprised of friends, Miss Louisiana Organization board members, former Miss Louisianas and family, including her mother Martha Leach.

“She’s just worked so hard and she’s so deserving of getting to go and I’m very excited for her,” Martha Leach said. “She has worked day and night. There has not been a day gone by that she has not been preparing in some phase of the competition of Miss America.”

Jaden Leach competed in the Miss Louisiana Pageant twice before winning on her third try, when she competed as Miss Spirit of the Ouachita.

Leach said no matter the outcome, she is proud of how far she has come and of what she has accomplished.

“My mindset is when I get there, I’m doing everything I possibly can to win, and I have done everything I possibly can, and I’m leaving it all on that stage and what happens is what happens,” she said. “I know it’s in God’s hands and it’s going to end up the way it needs to end up.”

The Miss America Pageant will be Sept. 10-15. Each contestant will compete in interview, evening gown, swimsuit and talent categories and an on-stage question. The preliminary competition will be Sept. 10-12, and ABC will televise the finals live Sept. 15.

A year ago, nerves and excitement filled 22-year-old Chelsi Hefner, who was crowned Miss Shreveport 2013. Now, she says those same emotions will fill the contestants vying for the title of Miss Shreveport 2014 Saturday at the LSUS University Center Theater.

“Competition is usually stiff,” she said of the pageant atmosphere. “This is a talented and smart group of young ladies. It can be nerve-wracking, but it is fun.”

Amy Matherene, Gerry Lambright, Lacey Sanchez, Tori Thompson, Julianne Tippen, Jamie Lombardino, Ginger Douglas, Alyson Humphrey and Meagan Lee will compete in four categories including talent, swimsuit, evening gown, and on-stage question. Each contestant also will present a platform on which their reign will focus

After being crowned Miss Southeastern in the fall of 2013, Reneé Picou began preparing for the Miss Louisiana pageant, in addition to representing Southeastern at various local and statewide events.

She joined 36 hopefuls representing universities and organizations from across Louisiana at the Monroe Civic Center’s W. L. “Jack” Howard Theatre June 26 through 29 for the 50th Anniversary of the Miss Louisiana Pageant and preliminary competitions.

Subject: Jaden Leach begins reign as Miss Louisiana

Author:

Date Posted: Sunday, June 30, 03:55:23pm

MONROE -- The day after being crowned Miss Louisiana 2013, Jaden Leach said her new title is starting to sink in.

“I woke up this morning and went ‘Is this real?’ And I got up and I looked and my crown was sitting by my bed, and I thought ‘Wow, this is actually happening to me,’” Leach, of West Monroe, said Sunday. “I could not be happier or more excited.”

Leach, 21, was crowned Saturday night at the Monroe Civic Center by her predecessor Miss Louisiana 2012 Lauren Vizza.

Leach, who just completed her junior year as a political science major at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, said she will take a year off from school so she can begin her full-time job as Miss Louisiana.

Leach celebrated with family and friends Saturday evening. She also went home to relive the moment she had dreamed about for years.

“Shortly after, I went back to my home and I immediately went into our TV room and turned it on and watched my crowning moment,” she said with a laugh. “I had imagined this moment for forever. I have watched so many YouTube videos of people being crowned, and to experience that moment is so indescribable, so I couldn’t wait to get home and watch mine.”

Now Leach will start preparing for the Miss America Pageant, which will be held in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sept. 15.

Leach said she’s thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in the national pageant.

“I want to be the first Miss Louisiana to bring the Miss America crown home to Louisiana,” she said. “However, if that’s not God’s plan for me, I know that the next 10 months as Miss Louisiana will be very beneficial. I know I can spread my platform, Children at Risk, along with the national platform, Children’s Miracle Network, all across the state.”

Leach was awarded the Children's Miracle Maker Award during the pageant for having raised the most money for the Children's Miracle Network, the national platform Miss America endorses. She raised more than $12,000.

Her personal platform — Children at Risk — encourages children with learning disabilities to focus on their strengths and passions.

“The Miss Louisiana Organization is all about finding your passion and focusing on your abilities, so I think that my platform goes along with the Miss America Organization perfectly, and we can really make an impact on children across the state,” she said.

This was Leach’s third year competing in the Miss Louisiana Pageant. She was competing as Miss Spirit of the Ouachita.

She said her first pageant to compete in was the Miss ULM Pageant during her freshman year of college. Since then, she’s had her eye on the Miss Louisiana crown.

“I won (Miss ULM), and from there I just hit the ground running,” she said. “I have learned so much about this organization. I fell in love with it as soon as I began competing.”

In her first Miss Louisiana Pageant, competing as Miss ULM in 2011, she made the Top 10.

Last year, she competed as Miss Louisiana Watermelon Festival and was named second runner-up.

The third time was the charm for Leach, who now proudly wears the Miss Louisiana crown.

Leach said she’s excited and ready to start her Miss Louisiana journey.

“It’s really starting to sink in,” she said. “My life is truly about to change forever.”

Since tonight ends with the crowning a new Miss Louisiana, I thought it would be fun to look at some fun facts. Can we extrapolate who could win the crown based on these trends?

Of the last 10 Miss Louisianas, 9 were students at LSU, Tech, or ULM.

The average age of Miss Louisiana since 2003 is 22.

The last 3 Miss Louisianas have been dancers with 5 total since 2003. 2 played piano and 3 were vocalists.

The only Miss Louisiana in the last decade to be crowned without winning a preliminary award was in 2009.

6 of the last 10 Miss Louisianas have won Preliminary SS. 4 have won Preliminary Talent. Only 1, 2003, was a double preliminary winner.

Miss Shreveports won the title in 2005 and 2009. Could 2013 continue the pattern?

I was looking at the locals in other states and noticed that Massachusetts offers a local closed to students at selective universities in an area--Miss Western Massachusetts (formerly Miss Collegiate Area).

I wonder if a local like this would work in New Orleans? You can draw students from UNO, Tulane, Loyola, Dillard, Xavier, and Delgado.

What do you think?

I think Sanchez is going to win. She has really brought her A game. I like McCord and Cox, but they just seem "off" this year. I hope that whomever wins, though, is one of these 3. They are our best bets for Miss America this year, imo.

Pageant week is officially under way in Monroe, and the contestants say they are ready to vie for the crown of Miss Louisiana 2013.

The 36 contestants were introduced at a news conference held Monday at the Monroe Civic Center.

Jessica Gilbert, Miss Spirit of Ruston, said she was ready and excited for the competition to begin.

“I’m feeling great about pageant week,” she said. “It’s so much fun, and we get to meet so many supporters of ours.”

Lauren Ford, Miss Monroe, said she was also excited about the pageant, which is celebrating its 50th year in Monroe.

“I am thrilled,” she said. “It’s wonderful to have the Miss Louisiana Pageant in the city of Monroe every year and especially celebrating the 50th anniversary. I’m very excited to get pageant week started.”

Dewana Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization, said this year promises to bring an exciting pageant week, with 34 former Miss Louisianas returning to participate in the festivities.

“This is a very exciting year for us as we celebrate 50 years here in Monroe,” Little said. “It’s kind of like a birthday party and a family reunion combined.”

The Miss Louisiana Organization, which is part of the Miss America Organization, has a volunteer-based board of directors that works to share the accomplishments of the 36 contestants and provide scholarships to further their education.

Little said the Miss Louisiana Organization will award more than $1 million in cash and in-kind scholarships this year.

Thirty-six young women from across the state have arrived in Monroe to compete for the title of Miss Louisiana.

The contestants moved into their rooms Sunday at the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Bayou Suites, which will be their home until one is crowned Miss Louisiana 2013 on Saturday at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre.

This year also holds special significance for the Miss Louisiana Pageant, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary of being held in Monroe.

“This year promises to be bigger and better than ever as we celebrate 50 years in Monroe,” said Darris Waren, vice president of the Miss Louisiana Organization. “People from all over the state will converge on Monroe this week for the annual event. Cities all over the state would love to host the Miss Louisiana Pageant, but we are proud to call Monroe home for the past 50 years. We are blessed to have the support of the local community and all of our sponsors.”

While the contestants will be in and out of rehearsals and pageant activities each day, there will also be public events and community service projects throughout the week.

There will be a Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser on from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Brookshire’s on U.S. 165 and the Brookshire’s in West Monroe.

The contestants will strut their stuff on the runway in the Dillard’s Style Show at Pecanland Mall from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

A new addition to pageant-week festivities this year will be the Miss Louisiana Variety Show, which will feature former Miss Louisianas performing their talent. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre.

“This is the first time we have hosted a Former Miss Louisiana Variety Show, but we are very excited to see many of our formers performing again,” Waren said.

For the 36 Miss Louisiana 2013 contestants, the week will be a whirlwind of activities, practices and appearances until finally culminating in the live televised finals Saturday night.

Interviews begin Monday night and continue Tuesday. Rehearsals begin Monday and continue through Saturday.

Preliminary competition will occur at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

“There is very little down time as we prepare for the live statewide broadcast on Saturday evening,” Waren said. “The excitement and intensity will build as the week progresses and as we get closer to Friday and Saturday.”

The Miss Louisiana Organization, which is part of the Miss America Organization, has a volunteer-based board of directors that works to share the accomplishments of the 36 contestants and provide scholarships to further their education. In 2012-13, the Miss Louisiana Organization made available more than $1 million in cash and tuition scholarships. Miss America offers more than $45 million in scholarships, making it the primary provider of scholarships to young women in the world.

Miss Dixie Gem Peach Outstanding Teen Courtney Hammons might want some tea to go along with her two! Today at the Miss LA’s Outstanding Teen pageant, Courtney was a double-preliminary winner taking both the afternoon Preliminary Talent Award for her piano performance and then, later in the evening, the Preliminary Fitness Award.

The 2013 Miss LA Outstanding Teen pageant is held at ULM’s Brown Auditorium. The finals, including the coronation of Miss LA’s Outstanding Teen 2013 will be held Saturday, June 1. Tickets are available at the door.

The mission of the Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen organization is to promote scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America’s teens. Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen is an official preliminary to Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.

Founded in 2005, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Inc. has become one of the top scholarship providers for teen girls in the United States. Participants, on the local, state, and national levels, have been the recipients of valuable scholarship assistance upon graduation from high school. Almost $4,000,000 in cash and in-kind scholarships have been made available to date.

As of September 2012, scholarship checks totaling over $611,000 have been written to more than 120 different colleges and universities across the country. Scholarships earned by contestants are paid directly to the institution attended and cover tuition, books, room, and board. (Some restrictions apply.)

The Dixie Gem Peach pageant will be held June 22, 2013 at the historic Dixie Center for the Arts in downtown Ruston. For pageant information and to download application forms, click here.
