For those of you that have attended the Ripon Show, you know that I welcome both police package and clone cars, along with a variety of everything else. I feel I can speak on this subject objectively, as I own both a restored police package and a "clone".
Regarding the show, both clones and police package cars are judged, but not in the same category. However, my class for the police package cars is the restored class, which specifically states; "Entrants for this category will include either original emergency vehicles that have been restored, or a police package vehicle restored to agency specifications for the time period of the vehicle year." In other words, it doesn't have to be a police package to qualify. It does have to be either a vehicle (whether police package or not) that was the actual vehicle used by the agency, or a police package vehicle. Example, in the mid 70's Belmont Police in CA for a period of about 7 years never bought a police package car. They would buy whatever Hertz had in a 4-door white V8 sedan. They had Fairmonts, LTD IIs, Montegos, Granadas, Zephyrs, and Monarchs. Some of them sported vinyl roofs and one had a sunroof. Anyway, point being is that if someone actually acquired one of these original vehicles, it would qualify in this category because the actual vehicle was used by the agency.
The category I utilize for the clones, I call the Novelty class. The definition of this class states; "Entrants for this category will include restored vehicles that are not police package vehicles, but have been restored to closely resemble one. This would include all vehicle years up to current".
I acquired my 68 Ford and made it into a clone. Not just because I couldn't find a police package of this vintage. I may have been able to find a Ford police package of a different year, but that didn't matter. I grew up having a 68 Ford Custom as one of my first driver cars as a kid, and decided I wanted another one to make a police car out of for my agency. So my motivation was specifically for a 68 Ford full size, whether a police package or not. And it took me long enough ( almost 3 years) just to find a full size 68 that wasn't trashed to make a car out of, let alone finding a police package one. So there can be a variety of reasons that people chose to make a clone. Another can be cost. You will notice that police package cars will cost you a great deal more in most circumstances, especially if they're older. And I'm not talking about an 84 Diplomat, I mean a police package from the 70's or earlier. Bottom line, they should be judged separately, but just as welcome at a show.
