Not bringing up any laws/rules/code/ordinances prohibiting the display of fire-police markings especially among civilian's my suggestion would be to license your car as an antique with antique license plates. In NY it is prohibited by vehicle & traffic code unless the driver is an official member of an agency. The more incidents occurred the greater the scrutiny these cars will get. Granted not many agencies are running 20yr old cars but they do stand out especially to non-car people who are clueless. Currently I do know of at lest one person who was hassled and that was with a 20yr + vehicle. So do as Grainy says.

I'm even thinking about getting coverups for my 20yr+ unit just to avoid any hassles. Even thou its a pretty well known unit and I'm OTJ who needs the agravation.
