Subject: Stolen NYSP license plates

The New York State Fair is in full stride at Syracuse NY. Yesterday there were over 105 thousand visitors. While the Troopers were busy policing this crowd someone stole 6 sets of troop car license plates. Various numbers from several different zones/troops. A year ago this would have not been too big of a deal. Usually stolen police plates turn up on a wall in a college dorm room. But now, with security being very tight this is a very BIG deal. The threat of emergency vehicles being stolen and used to gain access to events & locations has been a constant teletype 'alert'. (New Jersey & Nassau Co NY both had news items about this) I fear our hobby will soon come under the microscope. I hate to bring this up, but I have held these feelings in for years; If you are going to restore police cars and drive them, the car should be at least 20 years old. I have tolerated the late model ex-cruiser daily drivers, but I may have to be less tolerant. I may be selfish, but I don't want someone screwing this up for the old restored car owners. I see the intelligence traffic being transmitted and predict more strict controls and enforcement of existing laws that will have a drastic affect on our hobby. Please, behave and use your head. Trailer your car or go in convoy with others. All it will take is the wrong person needing help, approaching a ‘show car’ to call the press and this will be a bad day for all of us.

Grainy: I agree with what you are saying re: license plate hassles.............but, what is to stop a potential terrorist from making a phony tag copying a bona fide plate and affixing said phony to the same model of vehicle? (NT)Bearhawke in Az20:47:56 08/26/02 Mon
