Subject: T.P. :(

I know the Ingalls had to use corn cobs, or grass, or whatever, so my complaint is going to sound petty in comparison, but--why is it the only toilet paper I can find these days is white! What happened to color and designs??? I used to get this T.P. that was white but had little pink and minty-green flowers on it (Pretty Prints, it was called). It is now nowwhere to be found. Why? Is a conspiracy of the T.P. manufacturers, collusion to save money by making only white T.P.??? I mean, tissues and paper towels still come in colors and/or with designs on them!
I protest!!!

LOL, Cindy. Then there are those old-fashioned, one-sheet-at-a-time squares sometimes still found in public bathrooms. Talk about uncomfortable--you could probably cut your, um, bottom using those things, and I'm sure they were a vast improvment over the corn cob!
I'm jealous you could get color TP if you wanted to! Eugene is very "environmental" so maybe that's it. But then, why are the colorful tissues and paper towels still available. It's a mystery to me.
Speaking of paper towels, I try to reuse them if I've just dried my hands or wiped up a few drips of water. Sponges are more economical, but they are so full of germs! I wash mine in the dishwasher, but I still worry. Ma must have used rags, I guess.

Yes, I know what you mean about the sponges and the germs and I worry too, about whether or not the dishwasher can keep them sanitized enough. I think Ma probably used rags for everything.. I have always said that I would have liked to have grown up in the 19th century for many of the simpler things that were of the norm back then... but this toilet paper, paper towel, corn cob, sponge discussion got me to thinking that I wouldn't have liked to have had my cycle in those days.. the modern conviences of today are a God-send..I don't think it would have been too great to have to wash those rags out( or did they throw them away?). That is just to gross to think about, isn't it?

I hate to imagine using rags during one's cycle. No wonder they used to call it The Curse! Even switching from pads to tampons was such a difference! Some people complain about menopause, but I tell you I certainly don't miss having my period! That LHOP episode when Ma went through "the change" always bugged me. She already had 4 kids, and her contribution to the family was huge, so the idea that not having more kids meant she was "washed up" (even though it was only in her mind) was so annoying! Yeah, I know, it turned out okay in the end, but I still found it irritating.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 30, and Thank God that I had what I wanted.. a girl and a boy.. so there was no reason for me to fret about not being fertile anymore, and I looked forward to not having the monthly nuisance come my way. I wonder tho, if back in those Days when the Ingalls were living, if becoming infertile, or having always been barren was something that truly bothered the women, since it was something that they were able to contribute to life. I mean, back then, it was truly a mans world, and the men felt worthy in their hard work, and all of the rights that they had.. but women, I think, were passive, doing their womenly duties, and standing behind her family. Maybe having children made them feel more worthy? Just a thought.

Oh, I don't doubt the abililty to have children was extremely important. It's just that on the show, Ma already has 4 children, and she's portrayed as being the backbone of the family. Now doing a show about a woman back then who couldn't have *any* children and who was frantic about it I think would have been more realistic. I mean, even today, people with fertility problems get understandably upset.
If the show had kept going and they'd had the Boasts trying to buy Rose because they couldn't have chilren, I think it would have been more in the realm of the real-life LHOP.

Well Gee Ann, I see colors all over the place HERE! I don't look for the ones with prints on them tho.. but I see lots of blues and pinks and yellows. I have to say tho, that I really stick with the Traditional, White, Scott Tissue, only because it has more sheets and lasts longer. But it is far from the most comfortable of tissues.. (I feel like Mr. Whipple, here.. am I on T.V?) I believe that Scott tissue is probably as close to using a corn cob as you can get! LOL!

Hello Ladies,

this is an interesting thread!! Over here in Perth I see only a small range of coloured or printed loo paper, but I don't buy it as I tend to like a particular white one that has imprints of tulips all over it!

As for 'the Curse' as they called it - I have often wondered how awful and dare I say it but messy for women back then. We are very lucky these days with advances in respect to feminine hygiene products available!
