Subject: OT, kinda gross, but MUST read

Health bulletin alert! If you don't already do so, make sure you have a Hemoccult test in your yearly exam every year to detect blood in the stool (told you it was kind of gross). And if you are over 50 have colonoscopy. Don't settle for a sigmoidoscopy. Claim your parents had polyps if you have to, but have the whole deal.
The reason for this post, probably obviously, is that I had a "positive" on a Hemoccult, so then had a colonoscopy. Fortunately, turned out to be a minor matter :) and I'm fine, but I promised myself I'd pass the word about these possibly life-saving procedures. They're not fun, but it important to have them nevertheless.
Now back to our regularly scheduled posting.

So glad Ann, that you are OK, I'm not that age but thanks for the information! I don't know if you can ask for these tests on the NHS over here in the UK, you probably have to go private for them, I don't know? I don't have much confidence in the health service over here. My mum had headaches for 8months before they did any proper tests earlier this year, luckily there wasn't anthing seriously wrong with her but she is now on regular medication, but they didn't do a scan for a about 6 months which is rather worrying!

How frustrating that your mother had to wait 8 months to get tests! Thank goodness it was nothing serious.

Ann when should a person start doing that? (at what age?) My aunt just had to have a colonoscopy because she was SEVERLY anemic (normal count is something like 12 and at 7 they give transfusions and she was at 4 with NO symptoms what-so-ever) She was dreading it but said it turned out to be not that bad. She said she found the key to drinking the stuff they make you drink (okay bad sentence there!) was to put some power Country Time lemonade on her tonge. She said by doing that she ended up with no troubles getting the fluid down. So there is some more advice for everyone!

I am so glad you are okay and it was nothing major! HUGS!

I know I'll have to get a colonoscapy before I turn 50.(I just turned 31) My Grandfather died from colon cancer, my father had it(he only got cheched when my grandfather died. He was 47) but it was caught early enough) Then this summer my aunt on my mother's side was diagnosed with colon cancer. She had been sick for a while before they figured out what it was. We all felt bad because she's always been a hypochondriac and we thought it was nothing. She's lucky. They removed a good portion of her colon and she didn't need a bag(sorry, I don't remember the medical term) My family just isn't healthy. We have that, my grandmother died from lung cancer(of couse she smoked for years) my mother has Lupus and a thyroid problem, my aunt has a thyroid problem(opposite than my mother)and had 2 small heart attacks(their 54) my father has heart problems, I have a heart block and have had a stroke. It seems every time I go to the doctors I have to update my family medical report.

Ordinarily, 50 is the age to have a first colonoscopy, but if there is family history it is usually done sooner.
I was told not to have anything else with that awful "beverage" so there was nothing to kill the taste. :(
Shell, sorry to hear about all your medical problems. At least we live in an age when something can be done to treat them.
Oh, regarding the "bag--apparently is not necessary anywhere near as often as it once was due to earlier detection and better surgical procedures.
