Subject: OT: Something I thought you may be interested in

By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor
On the morning of September 11, Gedeon and Jules Naudet were in New York City a few blocks from the World Trade Center making a documentary film on the FDNY. The two French filmmakers, who are brothers, were the only ones to capture on film the first hijacked plane crashing into the north tower of the World Trade Center. In addition, there is 45 minutes of footage they shot inside the lobby of the World Trade Center as the building was being evacuated and fire fighters and other rescue personnel rushed in. Vanity Fair magazine reports that the audio on the film includes the horrific sounds of bodies hitting the pavement as people chose to jump from the highest floors rather than be consumed by the fire. It also shows hundreds of people streaming out of the WTC--when suddenly the sounds of the south tower collapsing can be heard.

Now CBS has announced it will air this video as a two-hour special on Sunday, March 10 at 9 p.m. That is one day before the six-month anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States. "It's something that's very vivid, very moving, and very heroic," said CBS President Leslie Moonves told Dow Jones News Service. "I thought it was very important as a broadcaster to show this footage." The New York Post voiced concern that the video of that fateful day may be too raw even six months later for a city that is still recovering. CBS paid the Naudets an undisclosed amount, although sources say it was under $1 million. The brothers plan to donate most of the money to the Uniformed Firefighters Association scholarship fund.

Thanks for sharing this with us Delilah. My response to this article, and it is only MY feelings about it,--and is not meant to offend anyone here, is that I personally don't care to see the footage of people jumping to their deaths, and the sounds of the screams and the buildings falling. I don't care to see the fear and the grief on the faces of the people directly in the middle of all of the chaos of that tragic day.

I was glued to my TV the day these Terrorists attacked and murdered our citezens, and continued to be obsessed with it for weeks to come. I just couldn't come to terms with this awful tragedy, and am still in awe that it was even possible that it could happen in our great country. I don't think that the families of the victims should have to watch this all over again either... but then of course they can shut the TV's off. I just feel like this would be adding salt to very deep wounds. Like I said.... only my opinion.

I too watched for days when it actually happened and don't want to see it again. However, this is a record of what happened right from the beginning and it should be preserved. For people who did not see what happened at the time (because of work, school, whatever) they might want to watch at least part of it (I should add I averted my eyes when people were falling/jumping out of buildings, I could not watch that), just to see what it was really like. Short clips or written articles just can't convey the shock and horror of it all. While I don't think we should obsess about it, I think we should "never forget" either.
Through the horror there were also scenes of hope, bravery and a coming together that were inspiring.

I have to agree with Cindy. My husband and I watched the TLC special last evening on the collapse of the WTC. I thought I was able to watch the live footage, since so many months had passed. Wrong. Images of the planes hitting the buildings, the smoke and flames, people leaning and/or jumping out of windows and the way the buildings imploded will be in my memory forever. It didn't even matter if the TLC show last night didn't show a person jumping down 100 stories ... my brain was able to recall it in vivid clarity. I guess it's much the same in that I am still unable (or is it just too scared?) to drive the highway my father-in-law was killed on last summer. The memories of twisted vehicles and blood stains are what my eyes see, not wide prairies and endless blue skies, when I arrive at that fateful intersection. Call me a great big chicken, but I don't think I will have the intestinal fortitude to watch the CBS Special in March. I'm sure some can watch it, but I don't think I can.

I understand and sympathize with you on having to be reminded of the place that your father in law lost his life... it WILL be with you forever, but by the Grace of God, the pain will lessen as time goes by. As for the events on Sept 11th.....everynow and then, the news channels recount the day by showing the planes going into the buildings, and then the buildings falling......my heart still goes in my stomach.

OMG...I cannot believe this show is going to be aired!

Alvin and I were watching Discovery (or whatever channel it was) earlier in the evening and saw the commerical for the show that Kim mentions. I was positively ill over the thought of all the people worldwide who have suffered enough without having to endure this! I realize that there are so many folks out there who are truly interested in the happenings and such--I respect that curiosity and interest but thank goodness it was "The West Wing/Law & Order" night because my channel got changed! ;o)
