This year’s Miss America experience left many contestants feeling deeply disappointed, emotionally exhausted, and, for some, truly traumatized. What should have been a week of empowerment and celebration became one of micromanagement, inadequate food, lack of sleep, and forced decisions — including pressure to use specific makeup artists that the eventual winner didn’t even use. Contestants, who worked tirelessly to earn their titles and represent their states with pride, were treated more like props than people. The mental health of these young women was clearly not prioritized, and the emotional toll of that is lasting. To the Miss America Organization: you must do better. And to the state directors: check in on your titleholders, not just to say congratulations, but to truly ask how they’re doing. Miss America is supposed to uplift women — this year, it did the opposite for many of them.
