Subject: I had neglected to mention Shawntel Smith in my list of surprises. I had her nowhere near the top. As you may recall, that year the top three were all non-preliminary winners.

Indeed, I have her dead last - lower than even Erika Harold. Shawntel is a gorgeous lady, but brought absolutely nothing of note in on-stage competition. But I also don't buy into the 'She won because of the Oklahoma City bombing' conspiracy theory, which always felt a little too on the nose. Has her interview ever been released? It likely came up in her Interview and may have gotten her some extra points, but other than that, why would anyone put their integrity / reputation on the line to fix a win for a random lady who happened to be from a state that was having a hard year?
