Subject: Rear bearing replacement

Well, today has been spent mostly under the car. I got the special tools from Koala Motorsport today, and by the time I got them, I'd already removed the half-shafts from the diff, the brake calipers and rotors were removed, and the axle nuts were off. I noticed that on the left side (the one that has been the noisiest), there was no lock-plate on the axle nut. I don't know if that means it loosened a little or something, but it was definitely odd.

Anyway, I did the passenger side first. The first special tool pushes the half-shaft out of the hub, and that went no problem. Then I used a slide hammer to remove the hub, which came out pretty easily, with the inner race seized to it. The circlip came out without drama, and then the special tool gets configured to pull out the bearing. One wrench to hold it still, another to turn the nut on the tool, and the bearing slides out easily.

A quick wipedown of the housing, and the tool pulls the new bearing in nice and easily. Circlip back in, and now I'm stuck with a hub with a seized race on it. It's currently sitting in the garage with some PB Blaster on it, I'm hoping it can soak in and I'll be able to get it off with a puller tomorrow.

On to the driver side, half shaft removed easily, but for the life of me I've not been able to budge the hub out, even with much wailing on it with the slide hammer. That too is sitting with PB on it, hopefully I can get it out tonight, so tomorrow I can take both hubs somewhere to get the races pulled off, if I can't do it here. I may just go to Sears and see if they have any tools that are better suited to the task than the two arm puller I have.

So anyway, that's been my day. I hope Toby gets the server fixed soon!

Oh, I also need a new exhaust. I've been noticing it's a bit louder than normal, and it sounds like some of the noise is coming from in front of the LR wheel. I looked under there and saw some little cracks, and of course a lot of rust. So I might be picking one up from a local CCAer. If that falls through, I guess I'll get a new one.
