Well you are right. No backpressure is good unfortunately you also need a certain frequency of shockwaves coming back at the valves. This in turn creates back pressure. Too much backpressure is bad since your engine has to work more to push the exhaust gases and too little causes you to lose some intake charge because of scavenging. I think removing your muffler would still be ok since you still have the cat on.
