Since it had been his bright idea to come be social – or Markku’s version of social, rather – he figures that he can’t really be annoyed at someone for noticing the bandaged leg or the obvious pain it caused. “I’m fine,” he replies shortly before relenting a bit. “And it hurts a lot. And I can’t go swimming.” This seems to annoy him and he frowns slightly at his foot again before staring wistfully out at the ocean. He wanted to swim; he wanted to swim badly. But he had tried that in the early months after the accident and had learned that putting salt water into gashes that weren’t likely to heal ever wasn’t a very good idea.

He gives the other boy a slight smile as he returns his gaze and thoughts back to the nest and te remaining three eggs. He blinks in surprise, as if seeing them for the first time. Which was actually very likely, despite the fact that he had been looking at them not ten seconds ago. “No, I’m fine. What’s your name?” he asks, desperate to steer the conversation away from his injury and the pain and helplessness that it caused him.
