Subject: During the Feast (yes I know, way overdue)

After seeing Fuareth ensconced in one of the sunny places outside, L'kas made his way into the Caverns where the feast was still going strong. He caught the end of T'bel's speech and looked around for the new Wingleaders, none of which he knew yet. Oh well, he supposed he'd get to know them soon enough. He saw V'tan waving to him from a table and went to join him. "I knew you'd Impress!" V'tan cried as L'kas aproached. He was grinning broadly as he pulled out a chair beside him. "Congratulations. Welcome to the fine ranks of blue riders." Then he turned to a woman on his other side. "See Mel, I told you. Voltaith was sure this one'd make a fine rider when we picked him up and look at him now." Mel, or whatevder her name was, rolled her eyes at him. "Of course V'tan your dragon is always the one who picks the new riders." She seemed kind of annoyed. Then she smiled at L'kas. "Congratulations from me too. I know you and Fuareth will have many happy Turns together. I'm Melynda by the way, green Karisath's rider." L'kas smiled shyly back at her. She didn't look much older than he was, and she was quite pretty. But if she was sitting with V'tan, perhaps they were together ... His thoughts were interrupted when V'tan offered him wine.

Ranee had expected to share the Hatching Feast with L'kas, but when she entered the Caverns late as usual she spotted him in the company of two other riders. They were laughing and drinking wine and seemed to be having fun. L'kas seemed especially interested in the woman who was a greenrider Ranee guessed. Well, she supposed L'kas would be spending time with the dragonriders now since he was one after all. Ranee was happy for him and Fuareth. She remembered the ecstatic look in his eyes as he and his blue had exited the Hatching Ground. She didn't feel badly about not Impressing, there would be other Hatchings soon after all, but she wished she could quell her sadness about L'kas. They were different people now, he a new Weyrling, she a lowly Candidate. Oh well. She wouldn't think about that right now. Instead, she'd grad some food and maybe go back and find Emilla. And speaking of Emilla ...
Wasn't that her over there? Yes, it had to be. Standing by one of the small unoccupied hearths holding something very carefully. Ranee walked over. "Hey, what're you doing here? I thought you were staying in the Barracks." "Well I was," Emilla told her,"but then I decided to take a walk on the beach and look what I found." She held out her hand and Ranee could see what was inside it, a tiny egg. "Hey, a flitter egg. Where'd you find it?" Ranee was impressed. "On the beach. There's a green clutch out there if you're interested." "No thanks, maybe some other time though. So, what color will it be?" "I don't know." Emilla replied. "But Ciel thinks it might be a blue or a brown." "Ciel? Who's that?" "A kid I ran into down there. She has a green fire-lizard herself. Actually," Emilla scanned the door and the people still streaming through it,"here she comes now. With sand. Great." Ranee turned to where Emilla was pointing and saw a small scruffy-looking girl moving towards them, carefully cradling a pot. She had a green fire-lizard perched in her hair Ranee noticed. The girl, Ciel, stopped in front of Emilla and lay the pot on the ground. "Got it. A whole potfull of sand." "Thank you Ciel." Emilla smiled gratefully at the child as she carefully placed her egg in the pile of sand and burried it a little beneath the surface. Then she placed the pot on the hearth where the sands would stay warm for the unhatched creature. "So now I just come and turn it every few hours right?" "Yeah." Ciel answered. "Like the mother does. Soon it'll get hard, and then it'll hatch. And have some food around when it does, they're really hungry when they break their shells." "Of course." Emilla agreed. "Thanks for telling me. And speaking of food, there's some over there for you if you want it." Ciel barely mumbled a "Thank you" before she streaked over to one of the long tables, where she made herself a plate of leftovers for herself and her little green. "Interesting kid." Ranee observed. "I've never seen her around before." "Neither have I." Emilla replied, turning her egg a bit more in the sand. "She seems to know a lot about fire-lizards though. Well, why don't we get some food too? Tending an egg is hungry work." The two friends soon joined Ciel and enjoyed the excellent feast.
