True and Tr’ln both listened intently while Talla starts to talk about her family. True smiled pleasantly, not seeming at all bothered by the fact that she had no family and Talla did. “That must be wonderful, to have siblings. I was an only child. But, I suppose that’s best for me.” She shrugged. “I like my privacy.”

Tr’ln laughed quietly. “Don’t count on hiding anything from Zairith, True.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” True said, sounding somewhat competitive, as if ready to show Tr’ln she could take it. She put her hand on the green’s outstretched muzzle, and Zairith crooned happily.

However light-hearted and at-eases the two had seemed just seconds before, and awkward silence came as soon as the word ‘son’ escaped Talla’s lips. Though the two friends knew exactly what Talla meant, Tr’ln just looked at her, as if wondering exactly what to say. True frowned, and looked at Tr’ln, as if not sure she knew what he’d do, either. It seemed, though, that True knew the truth.

When Talla was done with the next attempt at conversation, Tr’ln looked at her for a long time, and then sighed. “Yeah, I have a son.” He bit his lip for a moment, paused in thought, and gathered himself to speak again. “Trag. He’s mine and Tsuga’s.” He looked at True, and the girl nodded, as if to give him the courage to move on. Slightly inspired, though reluctant, he continued. “We lived at the same Hold, and... well, she was my girlfriend back then.”

True knew exactly what Tr’ln was thinking as he paused, wondering what to say next. She looked at Zairith. ‘Get Lat for me.’

{All right.}
In a few seconds, a masculine rumble, much like Tr’ln’s voice but a tad different, answered her probing mind.

[Yeah, True?]

‘Tell Tr’ln that I told him that, if Talla really wants to be his friend, she’ll forgive him for running away.’

[Will do.]

Tr’ln looked at True for a moment, and their eyes met in silent understanding. True winked, and Tr’ln gave a mirthless smile. Then, he turned back to Talla.

“Well, as I was saying, we were together, and we... made a bad choice.” He swallowed. “When she told me, I... freaked out. I didn’t mean to, but... I didn’t know what to do...” Expecting her to be angry—disappointed—something—he decided to add on, “It’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever made, I know... and I’m sorry for it...” He tensed up, as if half expecting her to yell or throw something at him.

True put a hand on the boy’s shoulder, and looked at Talla with a look that said, “He’d not as bad as this makes him sound.” For the moment, True could forget about that fact that she didn’t like Talla much for stealing Tr’ln’s affection unwittingly. Tr’ln liked her, and that was all that mattered... or, that, and whatever Talla thought now...
