‘Shards, Lilith. I’m loosing my mind. Everything’s happening at the same time!’ Rinali the queenrider took a sip of her wine. Though klah, served icy-cold, was her drink of choice, the woman had to admit she needed something stronger. Rinali had nerves of steel, as anyone who knew her could tell you. But right now…they needed a bit of help.

I agree. What is most infuriating is the whole business with S’peer and Halzay. Smith’s rider, she didn’t say K’mir’s name. Is a simple matter. He is not to remain here. But this bluerider…he is debateable.

Rinali frowned to herself, but not without a touch of humour. ‘You’re not sure? Lil, when did you last not know the answer to something?’

This is not a joking matter, Rinali.

‘I’m sorry. Kindly appraise me of the situation.’

The queen sighed at her sunning spot in her weyr, closing her eyes. Well, it began four years ago, when Elizabeth – Halzay’s green – went into flight. Scarth’s rider lost control, and…forced himself on her. This resulted in her running away, him being transferred to another Weyr, and also in a pregnancy. Halzay had the child, but did not tell S’peer, and has not seen him for four years. S’peer, as you know from W’ntyr, became guilty and depressed, and…

‘Attempted suicide.’

Indeed. Halzay has just been transferred here, and when S’peer attempted to speak to her – Scarth assures me to apologise – she was just as scared of him as ever. He wishes to know his child, and it would appear that Halzay is too scared to even talk to him. Her brother, Ojeth’s rider, has stepped in, and I think that he may have exacerbated the situation somewhat.

The Retired Weyrwoman shook her head tiredly. ‘Brownriders are mostly level-headed. T’rtatus may be able to control the situation, if he doesn’t get too carried away. He’s got a good brain – I remember him somewhat from the other Weyrs. S’peer…I trust him not to hurt Halzay after what happened during the two years after he raped her, but Halzay herself…I don’t know her. If she can’t get a hold on her fear and talk to him, this may never become sorted out.’

They paused, each thinking, and Rinali almost snapped her fingers as she remembered something. ‘Of course! T’rtatus looked after Maria after she was abused by K’mir. So maybe we can’t rely on him that much…rape during a flight and resulting pregnancy are probably sore issues for him. And the other problem as well. K’mir has turned up.’

Both dragon and rider sighed at the same time, Rinali finishing her cup of wine and switching to water – she didn’t want to have too much alcohol. What was to be done about all this?
