S’peer held up his hands. “Hey, don’t look at me! Scarth asked her if K’mir was in the mood to be violent. That’s all he said.” At that moment the bluerider’s main concern was how to avoid a fight with K’mir, if a situation arose. He had to stay calm, and he had to keep a rein on his temper. Remember what Rinali said. One more lapse in self-control and I’m out of the Weyr. As much as I want to give him an injury he’ll never forget… But when Scarth told him what Smith had said, he had to take a deep breath and count to ten.

‘Scarth, don’t get angry with her, please.’ He said in a slightly desperate tone, just as Scarth was about to retort on the lines of “What do you mean he’s been through a lot – look at Maria and all the girls he raped”. ‘I can’t loose Sally. I can’t. Or Maria, or Halzay…or G’rein. Don’t give Rinali a reason to transfer me.’

Scarth softened, gently reassuring his rider with a touch of his mind. Very well. But she has no right to say those things, you know.

‘I know. I’m as annoyed as you are – but the poor green is Impressed to K’mir. She’s under his mental stress as well as her own, and it must be eating away at her every time he’s violent. Scarth, think how bad you felt when I was drinking.’

The blue almost winced. I see your point. Dragons have no power to stop their riders from doing things, in most cases. Scarth knew what torture it was for a dragon to watch their rider do things that were wrong and no be able to help. So the blue remained a quiet, soothing presence in his rider’s mind, and also in Smith’s.

“Smith says that her rider’s under a lot of stress and is generally miserable. I think the word was “shredded”. Apparently a weyrmate walked out on him and he’s upset that she thinks he didn’t care.” Though every thought was underlined with a cynical tone, and had a thought behind it. Yeah, upset that he lost another person too scared to protest about anything. “According to her, he’s changed.”
