(And that number probably increases further if the family is religious Evangelical Christian.) That being said they did happen, at least in my family while growing up just outside Des Moines, although the last one I’m aware of happened in the mid 90s right before attitudes surrounding spanking children did a full 180. I am very, very doubtful that it is still common practice even in the southeast United States. Attitudes toward all child rearing, spanking in particular, are extremely different than they were just a couple decades ago. While I live in a more liberal area of the United States, I don’t know ANYONE who spanks their kids. I certainly don’t spank my son and never will. I have one friend who spanked his son one time, and I do literally mean ONE time he hit his son’s clothed bottom with just his hand… and he still feels bad about it! Basically a love tap.
