I am personally aware of the following teens being spanked age 13 and up:
- Myself, on 2 occasions age 13 and 14
- My sister, when she was 13
- My cousin Michael, when he was 13
- My cousin Alex, also age 13
- My friend’s little brother Ralph, when he was 14
- My cousin Jason, also age 14
- My cousin Miranda, again age 14
- My cousin Victoria when she was 15
These are just instances I know of, whether from hearing about them, hearing them from another room, or actually witnessing them happen as spankings were often public events since our family was so often in the same place. It’s possible they were spanked more than that after age 12 and also possible my friends or other cousins got spanked after that age, but the vast majority of spankings in my family happened to kids 12 and under and I never heard about it happening to my friends. I’m the only kid in the family I’m aware of that was spanked more than once after turning 13 (I probably was not the only one) and there was one spanking I know of that happened after age 15 in my family. That I can believe was the only instance of a child that old being spanked. It really was a last resort type of punishment, reserved for egregious misbehavior, once we became teenagers.
That being said they did happen, at least in my family while growing up just outside Des Moines, although the last one I’m aware of happened in the mid 90s right before attitudes surrounding spanking children did a full 180. I am very, very doubtful that it is still common practice even in the southeast United States. Attitudes toward all child rearing, spanking in particular, are extremely different than they were just a couple decades ago. While I live in a more liberal area of the United States, I don’t know ANYONE who spanks their kids. I certainly don’t spank my son and never will. I have one friend who spanked his son one time, and I do literally mean ONE time he hit his son’s clothed bottom with just his hand… and he still feels bad about it! Basically a love tap. Considering what we got growing up I’d say that’s evidence how far we’ve come.
