Some girls got caned at home just because a neighbour had told their father that they had been laughing with a boy. So we generally stayed away from boys when we were alone. Sometimes it's just an excuse for cruelty, but parents are understandably afraid of their child becoming pregnant. When I consider all of the girls in my extended family, no one is threatened with physical punishment, and no one has any unwanted children I'm aware of. My advice to parents would be to just be good parents, and provide the education and resources to stay safe. That works at least as well as the barbaric practices of the past. At first I thought your comment was very funny until I realised that our upbringing with corporal punishment in the 60s was actually partly also a form of contraception for our parents. Back in the day, I knew girls who were totally wild with no parental discipline, and teen pregnancy was sometimes the result. Other girls were raised very strictly, could not even date, and disobeying in any way regarding boys would likely result in corporal punishment. Sometimes that also resulted in pregnancy. In my family, we were all spanked growing up and into our teens. There was a blatant double standard, though, as boys could be boys with regard to sex. For a boy, it was kind of an achievement to get lucky. I guess many parents didn't think that pregnancy was bad luck for their sons, as they could just walk away from the responsibility.
