I would describe it as: FAIR and FIRM. When you mentioned that none of your children would assert that they were "OK with it (their spanking) ..." I am sure that what your children would mean is that their spanking was quite firm and that their bottom had not returned to a neutral or OK state. In short, they got a good one and they were still feeling it. As we all know, spanking works both by the memory of getting it AND by the tingling and smarting that is the gift that keeps on giving, perhaps for a day or so. But of course they didn't have the choice, any more than my grandchildren do today. That was decided solely by my husband or me. Each stroke is a serious punishment; that is the reason that canings can often be enumerated on the fingers of just one hand. Three, six, eight or ten were the normal punishment levels, in very rare cases a dozen. Sometimes one or two extra, because we made too much of a fuss during the punishment. And of course there wasn't a caning every week or so. On average over the years, I would estimate every three months per child, sometimes more often, sometimes less often. I discussed this with my sister on the phone yesterday, and she said that my estimate (every three months) was perhaps a little high. We agreed on three sessions per year and an average of seven strokes per session over the years. I'm pretty sure I won't have received three cane punishments by the age of 10, and by the age of 19 there was definitely only one – the last one from my father. So, very, very roughly estimated, there were about 180 cane strokes in my youth spread over almost ten years. That sounds much more violent than I remember it. You can avoid trouble simply by strictly obeying explicit instructions and otherwise asking yourself before every decision what your dad, or whoever corrects your decisions on your bare bottom with the cane, would expect of you. You don't always answer this question correctly, sometimes even deliberately. But the expectations and standards of your disciplinarian become a very defining element in your life. Even if it didn't always work, we did everything we could to prevent it from getting that far. Being rude to my father would have been unthinkable.
