 Survey for those willing: For those who got spanked at various times, were longer spankings with lighter swats worse than shorter ones with harder spanks? Was an implement on clothing worse than a hand on the bare? Was the humiliation of going over the knee when older worse than harder swats you might get when bent over or lying down?

If you really want to understand don't forget the emotional side.
Of course it hurts but the big thing for me was that a person who normally loved me and protected was deliberately hurting me and worse still thought he had no choice becuase of my behaviour
I didn't cry when I broke my leg at 8 but I cried every time I went over dads's knee as a teen. I'm sure it didn't hurt nearly as much but

A child will often make the most terrible fuss even if the spanking is not really that painful. It's in the mind. The fear is what makes it seem worse than it is, even traumatic, and as laura82 said, the momentarily broken relationship with the parent causes such painful emotions.

An adult being spanked will probably not feel the same as a child. The adult is aware of what is happening, and is able to process the experience more rationally. Some adults who are into spanking, and have been spanked before, can take what would be a severe spanking to a normal person, and not think it is hard enough. Pain that is desired and pain tolerance is not the same for everyone.
