Subject: A letting-off of steam

August 2024.

There are 25 stories left in the filler pool.

Enough to get NSC to August this year. And that won't be enough to fill the August volume. Gods only know when it'll get released. The way things are, NSC will have a total of 136 volumes.

F*cked if I know what exactly I'm going to do after that.

The arse has dropped out of the smoking fetish fiction genre, there's one new story in this months volume. The rest of the stuff I've seen have been AI-written or AI-assisted, or been smutfests, shocking blatant language and more focus on sex than smoking.

I knew it had to end one day, but, geez, if I'm to be candid, it's kind of pathetic.

If this is what the SFF genre is turning into, then I'm glad I'll be stepping back.

I'm genuinely grateful for the assistance I've gotten over the years, and I always will be. WE built a Library, that's freakin' cool. Nobody has done that before, but we did.

But you want to know what really irks me? It's when you try and help someone out, and they don't even acknowledge it. A thank you would have been enough.

And the other thing is when I've done something for someone, and they crack the sh*ts and talk down to me because it's not perfect.

To those people, f*ck you. I've had to learn as I go. I started doing this because nobody else was, using hardware and software so old, it's a miracle I was able to produce anything. I thought your work was worth it, and sure my preservation of it might not be up to your standards, but it's not like you made any effort to self-publish, aside from posting your work on a forum. When those places go away, your work will still be out there long after you and I have been forgotten. You're welcome.

Been at this for damn nearly 20 years, countless hours of work, many late nights, several battles with burnout. Depression…

All that said, I chose this. Did it all willingly, nearly 20 years of service, no fame, certainly no fortune, it never got me laid. Granted the odds of me meeting a smoking hot hottie, and her getting all excited over the library, are astronomical.

But when the call came, I answered.

If the Library didn't exist, if I'd decided along with everyone else that it was somebody else's problem, I probably would have moved on by now.

I won't be stepping back completely, because things would fall apart quicker if I did, and I know nobody will pick up where I leave off, which makes me sad.

I found this community in my very early 20's, I'll be 53 this year, I've seen the rise, the peak, and the decline, and gods know I've tried to stop it. But it's been like trying to fight a thunderstorm. Tried that once, but I woke up before things got interesting.

In the greater scheme, I'm nobody, and I'm fine with that, I'm happy to be forgotten.

I'll stick around of course, somebody needs to delete the occasional spam post. And I'll still contribute to the Library, if something interesting hits my eyeballs. But I guess one day, I'll go away too. I'll age out or walk away.

If anyone ever asks what happened to AusNick, the correct answer would be, Dunno.

Just keep the library going, keep it available. Download it and keep copies. Grey Man it, become custodians.

We built something great, don't let anyone destroy it. Don't let our work be for nought. It'll be your turn to step up soon, get ready.

Nick (Tired)
