Subject: Made a little change at my end

Been thinking a fair bit about A5 versions of works recently, and having played with the iRiver eReader, I reckon there's some benefit to it, especially for people who consume the content on small devices like phones and other small-screen devices.

So what I've done at this end, is move the two existing titles, "Nurse Regina" and "New Smoke City - Volume 01" out of the A5 Versions folder and into their respective folders alongside the existing A4 content.

One thing I noticed on the iRiver, is the A5 versions have significant borders of white space on the pages, meaning the content isn't really optimised for small-screen display. When I created the files originally, I did it so the files could be viewed more easily on small screens, and, printed on A5 paper (not that anyone other than myself would bother).

So I think I'll have a play.

Funny thing about the A5 version too, the file size of "Nurse Regina" decreased by about 200KB, whereas the file size of "NSC 01" increased by about 100KB. In both cases the page count was increased. There had to be a trade-off, and that was it.

My thinking is to scale down the near-borderless pages I use for recent front pages and image-dominant works to A5 size, this in theory will not only get rid of the superfluous white space, but improve the display of any images on-screen, and increase the word count on each page, which should reduce total page count. I'll be using Nurse Regina as a prototype, if I were to do NSC 01, it would mean having to rework the table of contents as well, as the page count would be likely to change, and I don't want to spend extra time on something that might end up looking like crap anyway.

When I'm done, and satisfied with the result, I'll drop a link. If I'm not satisfied, there will be no link, as I wouldn't want to waste anyone's time and bandwidth.

Having said all that, since I now have a new test bed, I'll likely drop a few more A5 versions. Complex titles like Smoking by Denise would probably take ages to rework, but I'm happy to have a crack at smaller text-dominant works. Any suggestions?

As an aside, regarding NSC, there will be a volume 137. I've filled up the two empty slots in 134, so any overflow will be filler for 137, so if I get more than 4 stories in the next three months, 137 will appear sooner, depending on new content. I was surprised to get two new stories so early in the month, so I'm interested to see what will happen. If you lot keep writing, I'll keep releasing, except I've run out of filler, so future volumes after 137, will contain new fiction that might be a few months old, but still new-ish.

I've…sort of been working on something, it's a sci-fi story, most of the female characters are smokers, just, it's over 1900 pages long at this point, almost 430,000 words, dunno when it'll be finished, 2025 maybe. But it'll be full of space ships, space pirates, space aliens, space cat-girls, and smoking (in space). And pop-culture references. I even decided to be a bit cheeky, and snuck in a reference to the Noble Leaf Library, or what remains of it, after 2000-odd years. Bloody aliens messing with Human development…

Anyway…

Nick
