Subject: Is the Death Penalty okay for PNG even though innocent people will be killed?

I'm asking for any opinion on this.

PNG now has the death penalty but it was only given out once, and overturned on appeal. Because of current law & order situation in PNG, more people are pressing judges to sentence people to death.

In the USA, a number of people on death row have walked free, some because new DNA evidence (not available until recently) proved their innocence. In other words, even with the justice system of the USA some people are wrongly accused and sentenced to death. (see the article I will attach to this posting)

In PNG, these innocent people would be wrongly put to death if the death penalty were enforced.

When the USA was at the state we were, no one worried about a few innocent people being wrongly put to death. But PNG is dealing with the 19th Century problems faced by the USA already into the 21st Century. Just because a few innocent people might be wrongly killed, should we not have the death penalty in PNG? Or is it a good deterrant anyway and we should push forward.

Any comments welcome.

Thanx.
