There may be something very practical that we are missing. Do the people have a lot of extra time and energy to be experimenting and innovating? What do our people do every day? I would say they are gathering food, cutting firewood, drawing water and so on. We take a lot of things for granted in the modern world. If we want food we open up the fridge. If we want to cook we turn on the oven. If we want a drink or a bath we simply turn a knob.

In the village, when you want food, you have to go out and get it. You need to do this every day because you have nothing to refrigerate the food with. If you want to cook you have to get firewood and burn it. If you want water you have to go out and get it. So what takes only minutes in the modern world takes hours in the village.

There are no service providers in the village like there is in the modern world. The modern world is filled with people you do not know who are working all day taking care of the things we take for granted. Refrigeration alone would give the villagers the extra time to do some of these suggestions we give to them.

So the greatest limitation for our village people is the village itself. If you want to modernise the people then you must modernise the village.

When we think about motivation for building money making schemes in the village we first have to think about the basic needs of the individual. If a person is hungry then the first thing he is going to do is find some food to eat and not be out there cutting wood. He may even resent the sawmill for making him spend precious energy on something that does not supply any immediate returns. Can he afford to think about tomorrow when today’s needs are not being met? Could you? We want villagers who use forward thinking but how can they when all of their time and energy is spent on providing for just the needs of the day?

When you go out and buy something do you want something that is going to make your life harder or easier? We need to provide the villagers things and ideas that make their lives easier and not harder.
