Subject: Lack of Motivation

Following the recent posts concerning the future economic growth of PNG I am beginning to draw some somber conclusions. Here's why...

In one of the post below here someone concluded that PNG will not and can not follow America and Eurpean models for economic growth because they can not urbanize to bring the workers and the factories to one or two central locations. Ok. I can understand that.

Another posting suggested that cottage industries be brought to the villages. Let each village become a hub of economic trade. To this someone suggested building small sawmills in some of the villages to get the people to produce their own wood products for overseas sales and therefore make economic gains for the entire village. The response to this was, "That has been tried before but they always failed because the villages were not mechically incline and could not or did repair the equipment and then the village leaders got into jealousy sqabbles and all that and they all failed."

Someone else has pointed out that the villagers do not advance or evolve even on their own. They have all been to towns and seen running water, so why haven't they brought even this basic advance back to their villages making it out of bamboo or something?

My conclusions are simple and at the same time sad and i hope to have the discusions continue so I can formulate another more optomistic conclusion.

It would seem to me that the problem is, 80% of the people in PNG are actually very satisfied with the way things are and do not want to change anything. Their ancestors have lived this way for thousands of years and they want to continue this tradition. If they are not motivated to work a steady job, then they won't and....don't.

I am beginning to think that although the purposes were all correct, PNG would have been better off staying a colony. I don't know what the ramifactions were prior to independence but one thing is for sure. For these 80% of the population, it matters not to them whether the country is a colony or not. They are going to continue living the same way. They reconize only one government leader. That is the tribal chief. Half or more of them don't even know who the Prime Minister is or what he does and don't care.

America still has something similar to colonies and these people are happy with this arrangment because they know that they can not stand alone as an independent nation. A good example of this is Puerto Rico. Every few years they take a vote to see if they want independence and so far every time they have voted no. They do better as a dependent of Uncle Sam. The Marshall Islands and Guam are the same way.

I am not suggesting that PNG go back to colonialism because I doubt they can. But I am questioning now whether this was the best thing. So now the question is. Good or bad. We are here. Now what? How does the country prosper when only 20% want change and are willing to work in this direction?
