Subject: Small trinkets is what they want.
In reply to: 's message, "EXACTLY EXACTLY very well put" on 15:00:22 02/22/00 Tue

Look, I'd love to have a fancy sports car outside my house.
But if I never got a sports car, I'd still be happy.
However, if I met someone who looked like they just *might* give me that sports car, I'd do everything possible to be their friend, to try and get that gift out of them, and then demand and yell at them if there was no other obvious way to try and get that sports car. I'd play every trick in the book.

Many of our leaders are defining PNG 'development' based on the ability to get trinkets. Villagers join the bandwagon and demand the trinkets too. Soon all of us are demanding trinkets that we really don't need for our lives, but we get really cross and strong about.

If I had been fighting for the possibility of my shiny free sports car for some time, and someone tried to talk some sense in me after a lot of effort I put out, I can tell you I wouldn't listen to them, and I would tell them they didn't know what they were talking about - I would say that I REALLY NEEDED THAT SPORTS CAR.

So there.
