Many logging companies point to the aid posts, roads, etc that they built as proof of development. The problem is that these 'developments' were generated from a very rapid use of local timber resources. What takes nearly 100 years to grow back (if it does at all) is used up in 5-10 years. When you use up the fuel for your engine, the engine stops. So when the timber fuel for development is used up in 5-10 years, that leaves another 90 years or so with no fuel for development.

Thus, the roads, aid posts, etc. all collapse with nothing to replace them.

So what happens then? People get desperate. They want those roads and aid posts back. Thus, they want the forests cleared completely. They end up as smallholders, maybe with oil palm. They end up losing all the options for living that they used to have. They end up working like dogs.

Good luck.
