Bainsey...you only have to look at the Street and Smith football post and your reaction to that....and the Mainejeff AE baseball post where Maine was picked number one and your reaction was...."we all saw that coming..." Given your reaction to the Street and Smith post I thought your reply to mainejeff would be something more like..."Jeff, its a little early to get excited. These polls aren't worth the time it takes to read them."

You underestimate me, kid.

"We all saw that coming" because such authors tend to pick defending champions that lose few to graduation. That doesn't matter if it's Maine, Northeastern, or Catherine McAuley High School. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out some of these predictions.

However, while rocket science is indeed a science, sports prognostication is simply guesswork. Don't take any of it seriously or personally.

I don't know if it's ever too early to get excited about your team, but I believe I clearly stated that the pre-season polls are, indeed, "not worth the time."

When NU...a defending champion, who didn't lose much to graduation, is picked...you say its wild speculation...and when Maine...a defending champion, who didn't lose much to graduation, is picked...you see that as a perfectly reasonable prediction. You agreed with the Maine baseball poll (and went on to say that you thought Vermont might give them a "run for their money") but, as for NU, polls are worthless. Anyway, I think we picked a good homecoming opponent this year and I'm looking forward to the game. Hope your new QB hasn't hit his stride yet.

Good lord, NU, do I have to explain this again?

> You agreed with the Maine baseball poll....

Wrong. I didn't say I agreed with the poll, as it's hard to agree with guesswork. I said that it doesn't surprise me that pollsters would choose a defending champion that is returning many. That's the status quo for pollsters. Why a different set of pollsters did not do the same with NU Football is beyond me. In the end, all of it is guesswork and only the actual results matter.

Bottom line: Stop taking all of this stuff personally. Let the teams -- not the pollsters -- determine your emotions.

Bainsey...I'm not taking anything personally or reacting emotionally. When you note that Maine has been picked #1 and go on to say that (your words) "UVM should give Maine a strong run" that tells me that you agree that Maine should be the top pick...but that UVM might challange. How could this be any clearer? What is interesting to me is when NU gets a top pick your reaction is "polls are worthless"....an observation that doesn't appear anywhere in the Maine thread. What we can both agree with is that this has been beaten to death. I'm done.

>Bainsey...I'm not taking anything personally or reacting emotionally.

Really? Then why say...

>What is interesting to me is when NU gets a top pick your
>reaction is "polls are worthless"....

For the record, I would say that regardless of who was picked at the top. If I am inferring incorrectly that you're reacting defensively as an NU alum, then I apologize. However, here's my beef:

>When you note that Maine has been picked #1 and go on to
>say that (your words) "UVM should give Maine a strong run"...

Yes, I said that and meant it. So far, so good.

>that tells me that you agree that Maine should be the top pick...

BINGO! THAT'S where you misquote me, my Husky friend. Nowhere in there did I say that Maine -- or anyone else -- SHOULD be number one. I said that Maine and Vermont would battle, but I said nothing as to the result. The reason? You cannot predict the results.

For what I hope is the last time, I said that I CAN SEE WHY the pollsters picked Maine: because it is the defending champion and it returned many players. As one who has worked in sports journalism, I understand the mentality of pollsters, which is really not that difficult to understand. Just because I understand the thinking does NOT mean I necessarily agree with it. THAT is what I am saying.

>What we can both agree with is that this has been beaten to death.

Perhaps, but when my integrity is questioned, I cannot let that go without setting the record straight. I'm done, too, if you are.

I'm thinking the term "sports journalism" has been an oxymoron for at least 10, 15 years now.

Now don't go reading anything into that.
