Subject: Imagine for Chris if he had married her

Proper job, stay home, provide, be a dad and all that comes with that.
And then right when he was heading into his midlife crisis she died of cancer.
It would be too late to start a music career. He would have to keep the ship together for his kids who would have been just about independent.
What are the chances that they would have even still been together? According to stats, not great. The perfect fantasy of married life with Carol would have been a really solid reality. Anyone who is married can tell you that it is not like the fantasy. Some parts are better and some are worse, but he wouldn't have the teenaged fantasy of what being married to Carol would have been, like but the reality of what it was.
Instead of regretting not marrying Carol, he'd have been wondering what he might have accomplished if he had really dedicated his life, at least for a bit, to music.
Depending on how things turned out, the amount of regret he might have had would vary.
Most people have a certain amount of acceptance for the fact that their lives turned out differently from what they imagined.
Every choice you make in life has consequences and its own regrets. Wondering or even wishing for the life with Carol is natural enough, but it's also perfectly safe because she is gone. She can't come back into his life and make him change things.
It's also a really great shield against any women who think they could get close to him. He always has an emotional exit. "It's not you, honey, it's me. I tried to be your boyfriend but the love of my life holds my heart and she's dead. See ya."
It is also a powerful lure for anyone determined to make him forget Carol. Cycle, rinse and repeat.
