Subject: New state ethnic stats

Here are the latest (2019) state ethnic stats. For each state I'll list from highest to lowest ethnic group for women smokers.

Alabama
White 19.9%
Black 13.7

The quintessential Southern pattern. Southern states tend to have significantly more white than black women smokers, the lowest gender gaps among whites and often female gaps (such as Alabama) with the largest black gender smoking gaps.

Alaska
Native American 31.1
White 10.8

The white female smoking rate in AK has been shockingly low in recent years but this 10.8 figure stunned me. One of the very lowest in the U.S. Also Alaska now has the largest white male over female smoking gap in the country at a very unusual 6 points (the national average is like 2 points).

Arizona
Native American 16.3
White 12.5
Hispanic 12.2

Wow! While a 16.3 is low for Native standards, it is very high for AZ Natives who have a notoriously low smoking rate. In fact this is the first time ever they have ranked #1 in AZ instead of last place. Also note the white and Hispanic numbers are nearly identical (and both low) this is unusual as normally white women are at least 5 points higher. This is a case of plummeting white numbers and stable latina numbers.

Arkansas
White 19.3
Black 16.4

It's rare for Arkansas to be below 20% in white women but nowadays it's very difficult to find a state above 20%.

California
Black 11.5
White 9.3
Hispanic 5.7
Asian 4.6

As rare as over 20% for white women is being under 10% is just as rare but it's no surprise California is one of those states.

Colorado
Black 17.0
White 11.9
Hispanic 10.2

Unlike the South, black women out smoke white women in the West.

Connecticut
Black 17.2
White 10.3
Hispanic 8.1

Big rise in smoking for CT black women. The largest black over white women smoking gap in state history and one of the largest (6.5 point) black female over black male smoking gaps I have seen in my life. In general the Northeast nhas the lowest male smoking gaps for blacks.

Deleware
White 17.4
Black 16.2
Hispanic 5.6

Decent white and black numbers for a Northeastern state, although the Census classifies it as a Southern state. Maybe it really is they have the white female over male gender gap common in the South.

Florida
White 16.9
Hispanic 9.2
Black 7.0

Of all the highest populated mega states FL is the best for white women. Despite tons of transplants it consistently has the Southern patterns of a white female over male gender smoking gap and a large white over black women gap. FL ranks dead last for black female smoking (probably due to Carribean blacks in the Miami area) and is a rare state where Latinas out smoke black women.

Georgia
White 17.3
Black 9.9
Hispanics 8.9

My dating site is showing a large increase in Atlanta black women smoking. Well it must be weed because the BRFSS shows Georgia is still terrible for black women (but not bad for white women).

Hawaii
Native Hawaiian 15.3
Hispanic 12.4
White 10.9
Asian 5.5

I don't know what kind of Hispanics live in Hawaii but the sample is always surprisingly large and the consistently out smoke white women who always have poor numbers in the Aloha state.

Idaho
Hispanic 14.5
White 13.6

While a 14.5 isn't that great for Hispanic women it is! This actually ranks #3 in the U.S. While Latinas out smoking white women is rare, having a 3.5 point Hispanic female over male gender gap is even more unusual

Illinois
Black 14.5
White 12.8
Hispanic 7.3

Normally the lowest smoking rate for white women in the Midwest but this year another state beat them.

Indiana
White 18.0
Black 16.6
Hispanic 8.1

18% is decent for white women but nothing close to the glory days of Indiana.

Iowa
White 14.7
Hispanic 6.7

I haven't calculated the national average yet but Iowa is always there and this year looks no different. Kind of sad that a figure as low as 14.7 would be average but that's where we are these days.

Kansas
Black 20.6
Hispanic 16.2
White 15.3

Unusually high smoking rates for both black and Hispanic women. So much so that whites rank last. Kansas also stands out for female smoking gaps among white and black women and a small gender gap among Hispanic (less than one point). Speaking of which Hispanic gender gaps have definitely declined from years past. 10 points plus were the norm but now it's more like 5 points nationally. Unfortunately this smaller gap isn't because latinas are smoking more, it's because Hispanic men are smoking less.

Kentucky
Black 26.0
White 24.8

The absolute best for both white and black women. Also one of the biggest white women over man smoking gaps I have ever seen.

Well I need to go to sleep so I will break this up in two or three parts. If anything surprised you so far let me know.
