Your Mystic will work with AT&T Broadband's Cable modem service. The tech's will not install on your Mystic nor will you get any tech support if you choose them. However, OS 8.1 works just fine with ATTBI. I have tested all of the OT/ TCP/IP OS's (7.6.1, 8.0, 8.1, 85, 8.6, 9.x, 10.x) and have found that they all work normally. OS 7.5.3 will not work since the implementation of DHCP is just not up to standards. You can ask the technicians for a basic install of your cable modem service. Have them register the modem on their laptop BEFORE they leave. Have them show you that they can surf. The minute they leave, plug your Mac in (While it is turned off) and boot the Mac. You SHOULD be online at that point with a dynamic address. Things have changed in AT&T since we are no longer an @Home partner. The modems MUST be registered to work on the network or you will never get connected. If you have any problems, email me at the address I have provided in this post. I am a field service agent for AT&T and do service and repair in the Oregon market. I know some of the Portland people. Most of them are very sharp but I can think of a few who you would not want touching your Mac. If you plan to go cable, have them do a basic install and you can finish the job yourself. Having them register the modem on their laptop with the Service Agent Software is critical as the web page registration method does not work from time to time. As for DSL, most DSL providers could care less as to the system specifications of your computer. They use DHCP a lot like we do. Make sure you have a fresh TCP/IP stack. In fact, after you install OS 8.1, do not configure OT or TCP/IP at all. Wait until your install. The only settings you will need to make are... connect using ethernet slot x, configure via DHCP server, and leave all the other entries blank. Visit the options tab and uncheck the load only when needed box. Good luck with your high speed service.
Scott
