Actually, I have tried it, and much to my surprise, under OS 8.1 at least, it worked. Sort of. I was working on a guy's CC here locally, and I had the adjustments made for 640x480 VGA, but Mac OS 8.1 allowed me to choose "800x600, 56Hz" as an option in the Monitors and Sound control panel.
I chose it. It worked, but the image was very distorted. It looked to me like it would have been correctable, but as I already had the picture adjusted to my liking and it was only going to 640x480 anyway, I decided I didn't want to mess with it.
I tried it with my Mystic (System 7.1) and it didn't work - just gave me a black screen. I haven't had the chance to determine if this is a software or hardware issue yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to that this week sometime, perhaps tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted.
Scott, here's the skinny:
1) do the VGA mod as you normally would.
2) Get the CC working at 640x480, and (at least for now) make sure you're running Mac OS 8 or higher.
3) Go to the Monitors (or M&S) CP and set the resolution to 800x600.
4) If you get an image, which you probably will, go ahead and do the back-panel adjustments *again*.
Let us know the results if you get a chance to do this before I do :)
