Thanks for the warning: the thing was reluctant to go back down again, but with a bit of persuading it seemed to work. There's a little bit on the part holding the upper head that catches on something to stop it going down too far, and it was resting on that when I left it, so hopefully I haven't ruined it.

When I feel its safe to poke around inside again (I don't have a CRT discharge tool, and I don't want to take chances), I'll try a disk in it while the drive is out, as you suggest.
