Thanks for the link. I've got the CC back together, and the symptoms are the same as when I started, so I don't think I caused any extra harm by lifting the upper disk head, but there's obviously something else wrong that I haven't managed to fix.

There's a replacement FD on the way to me, so I think I'll wait for it to arrive, and give it a go before trying the cleaning tips given. If the replacement drive fails, I'll try a proper clean instead.
