It turns out the head was bent too far: when I tried it with the casing off, I could see it wasn't making contact with the disk anymore. Luckily the replacement drive I was sent works fine.

Guess what? In trying to repair the old drive, too see if I could make it usable again, I tried unscrewing the same screws you tried, and I managed to break the head off too. I guess I should've paid more attention to your experience :(

Oh well, at least I've got a fully-working CC now :)

PS I never did find out what that mysterious black and white lead coming out of the video card is - someone here must know. I don't like leaving it unconnected when it looks like its designed to connect to something...
