That coppper spring is truly very easy to bend out of shape so that the heads will no longer read properly. Having done this myself, what I was able to do to fix it was to push down on the part of the head assembly just in front of the copper part (front being the front of the drive, where disks are inserted). This allowed the copper to spring back into place and re-formed it so that it would pull the head down far enough to read disks.

If the heads aren't making contact with each other when the drive is in the "disk-in" position - that is, when the disk carriage is fully lowered - then you probably need to re-spring the copper bit.

If that doesn't fix it, replace the drive. Macintosh 1.4MB floppy mechanisms are pretty cheap these days, so if messing with it doesn't fix it easily, just get a new one and use the old one for parts.
