Yes the expression on the boy's face is one of the most interesting things about this pic. He seems kind of sullen or resentful maybe?

The headmaster's expression is interesting too. His appearance made me think of Stephen Fry for some reason, does anyone else see a similarity? Stephen Fry plays the role of a caning headmaster in the 2005 version of Tom Brown's Schooldays, and also slippered a boy over his pyjamas (not very effectively) when working as a teacher when he was much younger.

The headmaster's expression seems to me to be strict but thoughtful. Holding up the cane like he's contemplating it. As though he is about to start the caning maybe? Anyway he's not yet holding it (or positioning his arm) in a way that he's ready to actually swing it in the right direction towards the target.

If we combine the different expressions then maybe the boy has been so naughty that he's been sentenced to more than one caning in one day. So his face is flushed or seems to have been crying from the previous caning, and this is the moment when the headmaster is about to start the second caning. Maybe the headmaster is having second thoughts about going ahead?

Another good thing about this pic is that the boy's position is quite good. His hands, head and shoulders well forward (which you can see from the depth of the desk).

for the archives, the pic was this one:
