Subject: If you don’t have “the look”, better have beyond phenomenal dancing instead and even then you may not place as high

While it’s ridiculously wasteful (of tape, I mean), generally judges don’t pay as much attention to the dancers whose shoes are untaped (extends the “line” of the leg, making the dancer look more turned out/crossed, I’m told), is wearing no tan, high poodle socks, or has a very dated (or poorly made/fitting) costume. Presumably everyone here’s discussing champs in general, opens in particular, so the likelihood of someone showing up with everything (or even some of what) your dancer has, plus “the look” means they look like they’ve put more effort into preparing and they more closely match the preconceived notion the judge has of what their top dancer should look like.
So basically, raw scores won’t necessarily be reduced unless the judge has a personal rule of “oh I always give my first place dancer a max of 96 points”, there just will be others who will get higher raw scores and that’ll reduce your dancer’s Irish points and overall place.
